Chapter 7 - The Breach and the Stand

Michael moved with the lethal efficiency of a man who had designed security protocols for the federal government. He grabbed Eleanor by the wrist, pulling her toward the hidden service elevator behind the study bookshelves.
"Go to the safe room in the basement," Michael ordered, his voice echoing with absolute authority. "Evelyn is already moving the girls there. Lock the door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone but me or Arthur."
"Michael, no! They have weapons!" Eleanor cried, refusing to let go of his jacket.
"They have a fraudulent piece of paper and a few hired thugs," Michael said, his eyes flashing with a terrifying brilliance. "This is my house. They are standing on my ground now. Go, Eleanor. Protect the girls."
He pushed her into the elevator, hitting the secure basement override button before she could protest. The heavy steel doors slid shut, sealing her in safety.
Michael turned, his face transforming into a cold, merciless stone mask. He checked the magazine of his weapon, stepped out of the study, and moved toward the grand staircase.
In the main foyer, the massive oak doors had been splintered open. Three large men in gray tactical uniforms stood in the center of the marble room, led by Harrison, the Mercer attorney. Harrison held a gold-sealed document in his hand like a weapon.
"Michael Anders!" Harrison shouted into the high-ceilinged room. "We are executing an emergency custodial recovery order issued by the Rhode Island Superior Court. Hand over Grace, Faith, and Hope Hayes immediately, or you will be arrested for federal kidnapping."
Michael walked down the staircase slowly, his weapon held casually at his side, his posture radiating a terrifying indifference to their presence.
"You’re standing in a private residence, Harrison," Michael said, his voice echoing off the marble walls like thunder. "The court order you hold was issued by Judge Vance, who received a two-hundred-thousand-dollar offshore deposit from the Mercer Foundation three hours ago. My cybersecurity team intercepted the transaction thirty minutes before you smashed my gate."
Harrison’s face turned white. "You... you're bluffing."
"I don't bluff," Michael said, stopping at the landing of the stairs, looking down at them like an angry god. "The federal wire fraud division has already received the encrypted logs. The state police are currently en route to Judge Vance’s residence to execute an arrest warrant. Your 'recovery order' isn't worth the paper it’s printed on."
One of the tactical thugs stepped forward, his hand moving toward his holster. "We have our orders, counselor. We take the kids."
"Take one more step," Michael said, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper, raising his firearm with a perfectly steady hand, "and you will discover exactly how much money I spend on my private security detail."
Suddenly, the secondary doors of the foyer burst open. Six heavily armed Anders security operators, carrying tactical submachine guns, flooded the room, instantly surrounding the Mercer hitmen. The red laser sights of their weapons danced across Harrison’s chest.
Harrison dropped the document, his knees shaking. "Michael... let’s be reasonable."
"Get out of my house," Michael said, his voice cold as the Atlantic wind outside. "Tell Charles Mercer that he just brought a knife to a nuclear war. Tomorrow morning, I am launching a hostile takeover of every single real estate holding his family owns. By next month, the Mercer name will be completely erased from New England."
The thugs slowly raised their hands, backing out of the broken doorway into the pouring rain, dragging a trembling Harrison with them.
Michael stood on the stairs, his breathing steady, but his heart was pounding for a different reason. He didn't care about the victory over Harrison. He turned and ran down the stairs, flying toward the basement safe room.

When he unlocked the heavy steel door, Eleanor lunged out, throwing her arms around his neck, sobbing with a violent, overwhelming relief. The three girls ran out behind her, wrapping themselves around his legs.
Michael dropped his weapon onto a table, his arms wrapping tightly around Eleanor, pulling her close against his chest. He looked down at the girls, then at the woman in his arms. The wall in his mind didn't just fracture—it collapsed completely into dust. He loved them. He loved her. And he would tear the world apart to keep them right here.
