Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Vow

The ride back to Newport was completely silent. The atmosphere inside the SUV was charged with a heavy, suffocating awareness.

When they arrived at the estate, Michael immediately walked toward his study, his movements hurried, as if he were trying to escape something.

"Michael, wait," Eleanor called out, following him into the room.

He stopped by his desk, his back to her. His shoulders were tense. "You shouldn't have done that, Eleanor. In the deposition. It was risky."

"It saved us," she said, stepping closer. "Charles was ready to file fraud charges. I had to do something to explain why you sleep in the study."

Michael turned around slowly. His face was a mask of intense emotional conflict. "It’s not just about the legal risk, Eleanor. You don't understand. The press calls me the virgin billionaire like it’s a joke, a character trait. It’s not a joke. It’s a wall I built to keep myself from becoming a monster."

Eleanor stopped, looking at him with deep empathy. "Because of your father?"

"My father loved my mother with a violent, obsessive passion," Michael said, his voice dropping into a raw, painful register. "He couldn't control his emotions, so he controlled her life. When he lost his money, his passion turned into rage. I swore to myself when I was a boy that I would never allow myself to feel that kind of intense, consuming desire for a woman. Because I was terrified that if I let myself love someone, I would become just like him. A tyrant. A beast who destroys what he claims to protect."

He looked at her, his eyes wide with an agonizing vulnerability. "When you kissed me out there... I felt the wall fracture. I don't want to use my power to control you, Eleanor. You’ve been controlled your whole life. You deserve to be completely free."

Eleanor walked across the remaining distance between them, stopping mere inches from his chest. She reached out, her fingers gently touching his arm.

"Michael, look at me," she whispered. "Your father used his power to crush people. You used your power to break my chains. You brought my daughters into a house filled with toys and safety. You sat on the floor for an hour helping Hope build a wooden castle. You are nothing like your father. You are the gentlest, bravest man I have ever known."

Michael looked down at her lips, the memory of her touch burning through his veins. He wanted to pull her into his arms, to throw away the vow that had isolated him for thirty-eight years. But the fear was still there, rooted deep in his psyche.

Before he could speak, the main alarm system of the house began to blare.

The red emergency lights flashed across the room. Michael’s terminal chimed with a high-priority alert. He flew to the screen, his fingers blurring across the keys.

"What is it?" Eleanor asked, the old fear returning instantly.

"The perimeter gate was just breached," Michael said, his face turning pale. "Not by paparazzi. It’s a commercial transport vehicle. Arthur just called through the emergency line—"

The screen showed a live feed of the front driveway. A black van had smashed through the wrought-iron gates. Three men in tactical gear emerged, carrying high-velocity legal summons weapons—and crowbars.

"Charles Mercer didn't wait for the court," Michael said, drawing a sleek, concealed firearm from a hidden drawer beneath his desk. "He obtained a fraudulent emergency recovery order from one of his corrupt family judges. They aren't here to litigate, Eleanor. They're here to take the girls by force before our legal team can file an injunction."

From the upper floor, Grace’s scream echoed through the mansion.
