Chapter 5 - The Judgment of the Council

The Moretti family estate in Westchester had never seen a gathering like the one held the following Tuesday afternoon.

The grand marble ballroom—a space usually reserved for major syndicate summits and high-stakes negotiations—was filled with thirty of the most powerful capos, lawyers, and regional bosses from New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia.

At the head of the long mahogany table sat Gabriel Moretti.

Beside him, dressed in a sharp navy suit, sat his legal counsel, Marcus Vance. On Gabriel’s right stood Cole Mercer, flanked by six heavily armed Moretti guards.

In the center of the ballroom, standing under the bright glare of the crystal chandeliers, were Victor Moretti and his son, Julian. Julian was sitting in a wheelchair, both legs cast in heavy plaster. Victor, a silver-haired man in his late fifties, stood rigidly, his face pale with fury and panic.

On the table in front of Gabriel lay three crucial pieces of evidence:

The forged medical files from twelve years ago, exposing Victor’s conspiracy to declare Gabriel infertile.

The certified genetic DNA test confirming Daniel Moretti as Gabriel’s biological son.

The recorded confession provided by Julian under interrogation regarding the kidnapping of Natalie Hart and the attempt to abandon the infant child.

Chairman Anthony Ruggiero, the oldest living member of the syndicate council, cleared his throat, his aged voice echoing off the marble walls.

"We have reviewed the evidence presented by Gabriel Moretti," Ruggiero announced, his eyes cold as he glared at Victor. "In our world, power struggles are expected. But forging medical records of a boss, kidnapping a mother, and attempting to murder a newborn heir of the Moretti bloodline... these are actions without honor, without discipline, and without forgiveness."

"Anthony, listen to me!" Victor shouted, taking a desperate step forward before Cole’s men blocked his path. "Gabriel was weak twelve years ago! He was sick! I protected this family! I maintained our territory!"

"You lied to your nephew for twelve years so your own son could inherit what wasn't his," Ruggiero snapped, slamming a heavy gold signet ring against the table. "You broke the sacred code of blood."

Ruggiero turned to face Gabriel.

"Gabriel Moretti. As the undisputed head of this family, the judgment belongs to you. What is your decree?"

The room went dead silent. Every capo in the room held their breath, waiting for the word that would send Victor and Julian to a watery grave in the Hudson River.

Gabriel stood up slowly. He adjusted the cuffs of his suit jacket and looked down at his uncle—the man who had watched him suffer through cancer treatments and had offered him false sympathy while stealing his future.

"Twelve years ago, I believed I was empty," Gabriel spoke, his voice echoing with profound authority. "I believed my line ended with me. Because of that lie, I lived in the dark. I pushed away the people I loved. I made myself cold."

He took a step toward Victor.

"I won't let your filth stain my son’s home," Gabriel said calmly. "I will not execute you today, Uncle Victor."

A murmur of shock rippled through the gathered bosses.

"Instead," Gabriel continued, his tone turning ice-cold, "you and Julian are stripped of every asset, every account, every title, and every property connected to the Moretti name. You are stripped of family protection. By sunset today, you will be escorted to JFK Airport and placed on a one-way flight to Sicily. If either of you ever steps foot on North American soil again, my men will not ask questions before firing."

Victor stared at Gabriel, his mouth opening in total disbelief. To a man who had spent his life chasing prestige and fortune in New York, being stripped of his wealth and exiled to a remote Sicilian village was a fate far worse than death.

"Take them away," Gabriel commanded.

Cole’s men moved forward swiftly, wheeling Julian away while dragging a shouting, protesting Victor out through the heavy oak doors.

Once the doors clicked shut, Gabriel turned back to the gathered council.

"There is one more matter," Gabriel said, his tone lifting slightly. "From this day forward, the Moretti syndicate is transitioning its primary operations into legitimate commercial logistics and deep-tier data security through Vance Dynamics. The old ways are done. My son will not inherit a bloodbath. He will inherit a legacy he can be proud of."

Chairman Ruggiero looked at Gabriel for a long moment, then slowly nodded his head in deep respect.

"Long live Gabriel Moretti," Ruggiero announced softly.

The entire room rose to their feet, bowing their heads in unison.
