Chapter 8 - Ambush at the Pier

The morning of the ceremony arrived with a thick morning fog hanging over the Hudson River piers. The foundation site was decorated with blue banners, surrounded by local officials, press, and security personnel disguised as construction managers.
Natalie stood near the grand entrance, holding six-month-old Daniel wrapped in a thick wool blanket. She knew the risks, but her trust in Gabriel was absolute. Gabriel stood twenty yards away, casually speaking with a city councilman, though his eyes constantly scanned the perimeter.
At 10:15 AM, a plain grey delivery van pulled up near the service gate.
Before the driver could even turn off the engine, five heavily armed men in dark tactical gear poured out from the rear doors, weapons raised, aiming straight for the raised VIP podium.
Panic erupted among the press corps, but the expected chaos was instantly met with calculated, military precision.
The moment the mercenaries stepped onto the pavement, the disguised security team—personally trained by Cole Mercer—sprang into action. Heavy steel barriers dropped automatically at the gates, blocking all exit routes.
Four sharp, suppressed gunshots echoed from the roof of the adjacent warehouse. The two lead mercenaries collapsed instantly, disabled by Gabriel’s elite snipers before they could level their rifles.
The remaining three mercenaries panicked, realizing they had walked directly into a steel trap.
Gabriel moved with terrifying speed. He stepped in front of Natalie and Daniel, pulling his customized Sig Sauer. With three precise, calm shots, he neutralized the secondary shooters before they could re-arm.
Cole and his team swarmed the remaining driver, slamming him against the side of the van and securing his arms in steel cuffs within seconds.
The entire engagement lasted less than forty-five seconds. Not a single civilian was touched.
Gabriel re-holstered his weapon, turned around, and wrapped his broad arm around Natalie’s shoulders, shielding Daniel’s eyes from the scene.
"Is he okay?" Gabriel asked softly, looking down at his son, who was sound asleep despite the commotion.
"He didn't even wake up," Natalie whispered, her voice steady as she pressed her forehead against Gabriel’s chest. "You protected us."
Cole walked up, holding the mercenary leader's satellite phone, which was still glowing with an active call from an international number in Sicily.
Gabriel took the phone, brought it to his ear, and spoke into the receiver in cold, fluent Italian.
"Listen to me carefully, Victor," Gabriel said, his voice carrying the calm, absolute authority of a king. "Your men are in federal custody. Your offshore accounts are frozen. This was your last move, and you failed."
On the other end of the line, Victor’s ragged, terrified breathing was clearly audible.

"You have twenty-four hours to turn yourself in to the Italian authorities for your historical financial crimes," Gabriel continued coldly. "Or Cole will personally land in Palermo by midnight. Choice is yours, Uncle."
Gabriel cut the line and dropped the satellite phone into a biohazard disposal bag held by Cole.
