Chapter 9 - The Legacy Reclaimed

By December, the shadow of Victor Moretti was permanently erased. Broken, bankrupt, and terrified of Gabriel’s reach, Victor surrendered to the Italian police, spending his remaining years in a high-security prison cell in Turin. His son Julian remained incapacitated in a long-term medical facility, entirely stripped of influence or wealth.
Meanwhile, the Moretti estate was bathed in winter light.
The story of the "Little Girl by the Trash" and the miraculous resurrection of the Moretti line had become a quiet legend within New York’s high society. But inside the stone gates, Gabriel was no longer spoken of as a feared underworld figure—he was known as a philanthropist, a devoted husband, and a protective father.
On a warm, snow-dusted Saturday afternoon, Gabriel hosted the official inauguration of the Daniel Moretti Pediatric Health Wing at Richmond General Hospital.
The hospital atrium was filled with guests: doctors, foundation members, and families whose children had received specialized treatments funded entirely by Gabriel’s legitimate corporate assets.
Gabriel stepped up to the podium, wearing an immaculate black suit. On his arm was Natalie, looking radiant in a dark green velvet dress. Behind them stood Claire, Sophie, and Aunt Ruth, watching with bright, tear-filled eyes.
"Twelve years ago, I was given a sentence," Gabriel spoke into the microphone, his deep voice filling the hall. "I was told my life was defined by limitations, by coldness, and by an inability to leave anything lasting behind. I built walls to protect myself from the truth."
He paused, looking over at Sophie, who was sitting in the front row holding a soft toy rabbit.
"Then an eight-year-old girl walked through a snowstorm holding a cold mitten and a Polaroid photo," Gabriel smiled gently. "She proved that miracles don't ask for permission. They just arrive."
The room burst into warm, heartfelt applause.
"My son, Daniel, represents a second chance," Gabriel continued. "Not just for me, but for this entire family. We cannot change where we came from, but we have total power over what we build for the future. Today, this hospital wing opens so that no parent ever has to feel hopeless when fighting for their child's life."
After the speeches, as guests gathered around the catering tables, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw walked over to Gabriel, holding a champagne glass.

"You look different, Gabriel," Elizabeth said warmly. "The darkness that used to sit on your shoulders... it’s completely gone."
"I have no room for darkness anymore, Elizabeth," Gabriel replied, looking over at Daniel, who was playing happily in Natalie’s arms. "I’m too busy keeping up with my son."
