Chapter 5 - Infiltration

The city of Boston was draped in a cold, grey autumn rain as they arrived. Leaving the Sparrow hidden in Portland, they had taken a stolen, unmarked sedan south, navigating the highway through minor backroads to avoid the state police checkpoints that had undoubtedly been set up under General Cole’s authority.

Dr. Vance was resting at a safe house in New Hampshire—a secure, off-the-grid cabin owned by a retired military physician Lily trusted.

Now, Caleb and Lily stood on the wet asphalt of an alleyway in South Boston, looking up at the towering, glass-and-steel facade of the Sentinel Group’s primary corporate headquarters. The building was a fortress. Armed security guards patrolled the perimeter, and every entrance was fitted with high-frequency military scanners.

"How do we get in, Caleb?" Lily whispered, her hand tucked under his arm, her eyes scanning the security details.

Caleb didn't sign. He simply reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, old-fashioned brass key—the key to the old VA Medical Center’s underground utility tunnels.

"The VA hospital," Lily realized, her eyes widening. "The tunnels go all the way under the city block. They connect to the Sentinel building’s primary power vault."

Caleb nodded once, a cold, determined expression on his face.

They slipped down into the dark, damp utility entrance of the old Franklin VA Medical Center. Walking through those familiar, brick-lined corridors brought a rush of bitter memories back to Lily—the smell of floor wax, the screams of the broken soldiers, and the cold, high-security ward of Room 12.

But as they walked, Caleb reached out, his hand wrapping around hers, squeezing it with a steady, comforting strength.

You are not a probationary nurse anymore, Lily, he signed, his eyes soft as he looked down at her. And I am not a prisoner. We are here as equals.

They reached the heavy, steel fire door that separated the hospital’s utility network from the Sentinel building's electrical vault. Caleb pulled a set of tactical lockpicks from his belt, working the heavy cylinder lock with a fast, practiced ease.

With a soft click, the door swung open, revealing the massive, high-voltage transformer room of the Sentinel headquarters.

The air inside was hot, humming with a low, vibrating energy that made the hairs on Lily’s arms stand up.

"We need to reach the main server room on the thirtieth floor," Lily whispered. "That’s where Cole’s personal database is located. If we can copy his financial records and his correspondence with the rogue military board, we can expose him to the Joint Chiefs of Staff."

"I will clear the way," Caleb signed, checking his weapon. "Keep behind me."

They slipped into the service elevator, the heavy metal cage rising slowly, silently through the heart of the enemy’s fortress.
