Chapter 6 - The Lion's Den

The thirtieth floor of the Sentinel building was a silent, sterile labyrinth of black marble and white glass. The corporate offices were empty, the late-night staff having already departed, leaving only the security details patrolling the corridors.
Caleb moved with lethal, ghost-like efficiency. Every time a guard approached, Caleb would slip from the shadows, neutralizing them with silent, non-lethal sleeper holds before they could even reach for their radios.
Within ten minutes, they had reached the massive, double oak doors of General Marcus Cole’s private office.
Lily ran to the main mahogany desk, her fingers flying across the keyboard of Cole’s personal terminal. She slid Dr. Vance’s silver security card into the reader, bypassing the first layer of encryption.
"I’m in," Lily whispered, her eyes scanning the digital manifests. "My god, Caleb... it’s not just an orbital system. Cole has already sold the access protocols for the Aegis network to a private mercenary coalition in Eastern Europe. The transfer is scheduled to execute at midnight tonight."
"That’s in fifteen minutes," Caleb said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble.
Suddenly, the lights in the office flickered and died, plunging the room into a deep, shadow-filled darkness. The heavy oak doors behind them slammed shut with a definitive, metallic bang, the locks sliding into place with a cold, terrifying finality.
From the speaker on the wall, a calm, deeply authoritative voice echoed through the room.
"You always were a brilliant tactician, Caleb," General Marcus Cole said, his voice cold, steady, and entirely devoid of remorse. "But you always had one fatal flaw. You care too much about the people who try to save you."
The large, floor-to-ceiling glass window behind the desk suddenly shattered inward as a tear gas canister sailed into the room, filling the air with blinding, choking smoke.
Caleb immediately lunged forward, throwing his body over Lily, shielding her from the flying glass and the toxic gas.
"Hold your breath!" Caleb barked.
Through the white smoke, four heavily armed operators in gas masks burst through the doors, their weapons raised.
"Do not shoot the asset!" the lead operator shouted. "Take him alive! Eliminate the female!"
Caleb didn't hesitate. He raised his weapon, firing three rapid shots through the smoke, neutralizing the lead operator before throwing himself into the remaining three.
A brutal, close-quarters melee erupted in the dark, smoke-filled office. Caleb fought with a savage, desperate fury, his body absorbing the blows of his enemies as he fought to protect the woman he loved.
But as he pinned the second operator to the floor, a sharp, sudden pain flared in his neck.
The third operator had sneaked up behind him, injecting a high-potency military sedative directly into his jugular vein.
Caleb gasped, his vision spinning instantly into a dark, swirling vortex. He stumbled backward, his hands reaching desperately toward Lily through the thick, choking smoke.

"Lily..." he whispered, his voice cracking before his knees buckled, his massive frame crashing hard against the marble floor.
"Caleb!" Lily screamed, her voice filled with pure, unadulterated terror as she was grabbed from behind by the remaining operators, her hands pinned behind her back as they dragged her away from his limp, unconscious body.
