Chapter 4 - Secrets in the Shadows

The SUV moved smoothly through Chicago traffic, surrounded by its silent escort of black vehicles. Inside, the leather seats were heated, the air tasted of clean oxygen, and a small glass partition separated us from the driver.

Ethan held a cold velvet ice pack against my swollen wrist while I leaned against his shoulder, slowly digesting the unbelievable truth of the man sitting beside me.

"I owe you an explanation, Emma," he said softly, his fingers gently playing with mine. "A complete one."

"Start from the beginning," I replied, looking down at the four-carat sapphire ring on my finger. "Starting with this three-point-eight million dollar ring."

Ethan let out a soft, rueful sigh. "My great-grandmother, Eleanor Mercer, was a woman who hated high-society posturing. When my grandfather built Mercer Global into an empire, she spent her life founding homeless shelters and orphanages across Illinois. Before she died, she gave that ring to my father with a single instruction: it was only to be given to a woman who possessed a truly good heart—a woman who wouldn't care if the stone was real or fake."

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. "And you gave it to me."

"Because you spent your weekends sitting beside five-year-old cancer patients, reading them stories until your voice went raspy," Ethan whispered, kissing my fingers. "Because when we went on our first date at that cheap diner, you tipped the waitress fifty dollars using the last cash in your purse because you saw her hands shaking from exhaustion. You are everything my great-grandmother was, Emma."

"Why didn't you tell me about the money, Ethan?" I asked softly, my voice laced with a gentle sadness. "Did you not trust me?"

Ethan looked away for a moment, his jaw tightening as if haunted by old memories.

"Five years ago, before I met you," Ethan explained, "I was engaged to a woman named Victoria Sterling. She was an heiress from New York. I thought she loved me. But two weeks before our wedding, I caught her discussing with her father how my family’s trust fund would be split up in the event of a prenuptial loophole. She didn't love me, Emma. She loved the Mercer name. She loved the yachts, the private jets, and the power."

He turned back to me, his eyes raw with vulnerability.

"I walked away from the family firm that week," he continued. "I took a modest salary from our agricultural research branch, moved into a small apartment, drove an old car, and swore I would never let another person into my life unless they saw me—just Ethan."

"And then you met me," I said gently.

"And then I met you," he smiled, a soft, beautiful warmth spreading across his face. "And for three years, I have been the happiest man alive. But I was selfish, Emma. By keeping my real life a secret, I exposed you to people like Victoria Bellamy and Madison Reed. I thought I was keeping you safe from my world, but I ended up leaving you completely unprotected."

"You protected me today," I said, leaning up to kiss his cheek. "You brought half of Chicago to a standstill for me."

Ethan’s phone vibrated sharply in his inner pocket. He pulled it out, looking at the caller ID. His eyes darkened slightly.

"Who is it?" I asked.

"My mother," Ethan answered quietly. "Julianna Mercer. She saw the news."

"The news?"

Ethan tapped the screen of his tablet and handed it to me.

Social media was already exploding. Video footage shot by onlookers on Oak Street was going viral across the internet. Headlines were multiplying rapidly:

My heart dropped into my stomach. "Oh no... Ethan, everyone at Lurie Children’s Hospital is going to see this!"

"Don't worry about the hospital," Ethan said firmly. "I've already spoken with the board of directors. Your job is safe, and your privacy will be protected. But..." He looked down at his vibrating phone. "My mother wants us at the Mercer estate in Lake Forest tonight."

I felt a sudden knot of anxiety form in my chest. "Your mother... does she know about me?"

Ethan hesitated for a microsecond—a reaction that didn't escape my notice.

"She knows I am engaged to a nurse," Ethan said carefully. "And Julianna Mercer is a woman who believes very strongly in tradition, family pedigree, and political alliances."

"In other words," I said, setting the tablet down, "she’s going to hate me."

Ethan took both of my hands in his, his expression absolute and unyielding. "It doesn't matter what she thinks, Emma. You are marrying me. And no one—not Victoria Bellamy, not Madison Reed, and not my mother—will ever make you feel small again."
