Chapter 8 - The Drake Hotel Showdown

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was packed to capacity with reporters, camera crews, local politicians, and high-society photographers.

At the center podium stood Conrad Vale—a stout, silver-haired man in a six-thousand-dollar suit, looking every bit the furious corporate tycoon. Beside him stood his daughter, Sabrina Vale, wearing a modest, dark dress, playing the role of an innocent victim for the rolling cameras.

"...and so I ask the people of Chicago!" Conrad Vale boomed into the cluster of microphones, gesturing grandly with his hands. "Are we going to allow a shadowy billionaire like Ethan Mercer to use his corporate power to crush local businesses, shut down historic Oak Street boutiques, and intimidate my daughter over a harmless misunderstanding in a bridal shop?!"

Flashes exploded across the room as reporters scribbled furiously on their pads.

"Mr. Mercer thinks he owns this city!" Conrad continued, building his dramatic momentum. "He thinks because his family has billions that he can operate above the law! I call upon the Mayor’s office and the State Attorney to investigate Mercer Global Holding for predatory loan practices!"

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom clicked open.

The noise in the room died down almost instantly as camera crews scrambled to turn their heavy lenses around.

Walking down the center aisle, completely unbothered by the flashing cameras, was Ethan Mercer.

He wore a dark navy double-breasted suit, his expression calm, commanding, and absolute.

And holding his arm, wearing an elegant, powder-blue suit dress with her hair flowing softly over her shoulders, was me. My hand was resting proudly against his arm, the four-carat vintage sapphire sparkling beneath the bright television lights.

Beside us walked Harrison and two senior attorneys carrying leather document cases.

Conrad Vale’s voice caught in his throat. He stared in disbelief as Ethan and I walked straight up toward the stage.

"Mr. Mercer!" a reporter shouted, pushing a microphone forward. "Is it true you shut down Bellamy Bridal House out of revenge?!"

"Mr. Mercer, are you foreclosing on Vale Real Estate over a personal feud?!" another yelled.

Ethan did not answer the reporters. He walked directly onto the elevated stage, stepping up to the secondary podium beside Conrad Vale.

The security guards hired by Conrad Vale looked at Ethan’s approaching team, recognized Harrison’s senior security force, and quietly stepped back, refusing to intervene.

Ethan leaned into the microphone, his calm, authoritative voice echoing through the heavy speakers in the ballroom.

"Good afternoon, members of the press," Ethan said smoothly. "Mr. Vale has made several bold statements today regarding my family’s firm and my personal integrity. Allow me to provide the facts that Mr. Vale conveniently omitted."

Ethan gestured to Harrison, who instantly tapped a button on his laptop. The two massive digital projection screens behind the podium—which Conrad Vale had set up for his presentation—flickered and changed.

Instead of Conrad's logo, the high-definition security footage from Bellamy Bridal House flashed across the forty-foot screens.

The entire ballroom gasped as the video played: Victoria Bellamy shouting at me, Sabrina Vale making derogatory comments about my ring and my background, and finally, the heavy security guard violently grabbing my arm and shoving me onto the frozen pavement outside.

The camera zoomed in on my bleeding knees and bruised wrist as I lay on the sidewalk while Sabrina Vale and Victoria Bellamy stood behind the glass, laughing with champagne glasses in their hands.

The ballroom descended into utter uproar. Reporters began shouting questions at Sabrina Vale, whose face turned completely green as she shrank back behind her father.

"As you can see," Ethan’s voice cut through the chaos like a knife, "Bellamy Bridal House was closed due to severe criminal assault occurring on the premises—an assault witnessed and encouraged by Ms. Sabrina Vale."

Ethan turned his head, looking directly at Conrad Vale.

"Furthermore," Ethan continued, pulling a set of audited financial records from Harrison’s briefcase, "Mr. Vale claims Mercer Global is engaging in predatory loan practices. What he failed to mention is that Vale Real Estate has missed three consecutive interest payments on its thirty-two-million-dollar development loan due to severe internal embezzlement within his own management team."

Conrad Vale turned white as a sheet. "That... that’s confidential financial data! How did you—"

"Mercer Capital completed a full forensic audit of your firm at eight o'clock this morning," Ethan said coldly, leaning closer to the microphone. "Mr. Vale, you didn't call this press conference to defend your daughter. You called it because you are insolvent, and you hoped to bully my firm into forgiving your debt before the fraud department opens an investigation on Monday."

The room erupted into absolute madness. Photographers jumped onto chairs, flashes blinding the stage, while reporters shouted questions at Conrad Vale, who looked like he was suffering a minor heart attack.

Ethan reached out, gently taking my hand in his.

"My fiancée, Emma Collins, is a pediatric nurse who spends her life saving children," Ethan said into the microphone, his voice echoing with absolute warmth and pride. "She represents everything that is good, honest, and brave in this city. Anyone who attempts to harm her, humiliate her, or use her name for cheap political theater will face the full weight of my family’s resources."

Ethan turned away from the podium, leaving Conrad Vale standing in front of fifty shouting reporters and flashing cameras.

As we walked down the center aisle toward the exit, holding hands, I looked up at Ethan, a soft laugh escaping my lips.

"Well," I whispered. "That certainly beats going to a bridal shop."

Ethan smiled down at me, his eyes filled with pure love. "We still have one problem, Emma."

"What’s that?"

"You still don't have a wedding dress."
