Chapter 7 - The Mastermind’s Trap

The morning light broke over Chicago, illuminating the skyline in shades of pink and gold.

I woke up in the master bedroom of Ethan’s private penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan—a home he had owned for years but rarely visited during his time playing a quiet agricultural consultant.

The physical bruises on my knees had dulled to a light purple, but my mind was clearer than it had ever been.

Ethan was already up, sitting at a glass dining table in his silk robe, reviewing three computer monitors displaying financial charts, legal briefs, and media reports.

Beside him, Harrison was delivering a hot cup of black coffee while managing two ringing mobile phones.

"Good morning, sleepyhead," Ethan said, his face instantly brightening as I walked out wearing one of his oversized white button-down shirts. He stood up, pulled me into his arms, and kissed me softly on the lips.

"Good morning," I smiled, sitting on his lap and looking at the chaotic screens in front of him. "What's happening?"

"The fallout from yesterday," Ethan explained, wrapping his arms around my waist. "Victoria Bellamy’s boutique was officially locked down at four o'clock yesterday afternoon. Our legal team filed a formal injunction against her business partners, and three major high-fashion houses in Paris have already terminated their distribution contracts with her."

"And Madison?" I asked, a slight knot returning to my stomach.

Ethan’s eyes darkened slightly. "Madison's husband, Blake Reed, called my office five times this morning. He was frantic. It turns out Blake’s hedge fund was attempting to secure a fifty-million-dollar credit facility from Mercer Capital to bail out his firm from bad tech investments."

I looked at Ethan. "And what did you do?"

"I didn't do anything yet," Ethan replied. "I left the decision to you."

I stared at him, surprised. "To me?"

"Blake Reed didn't assault you on Oak Street, but he enabled Madison's arrogance," Ethan said gently. "If you want me to approve the loan and give Blake a chance to save his business, I will do it. If you want me to deny it and let his firm crumble, it will be done by noon. You hold the pen, Emma."

I sat quietly for a long moment, watching the morning waves crash against the shoreline outside the window.

Power was a dangerous thing. It was so easy to let revenge take over, to smash everyone who had ever caused me pain into dust. It was what Victoria Bellamy had done. It was what Charlotte Vance had tried to do.

"Tell Blake Reed that Mercer Capital will approve his credit facility," I said slowly.

Ethan raised a fine eyebrow, clearly surprised. "Are you sure, Emma? After how Madison treated you?"

"Yes," I said firmly, looking into Ethan’s eyes. "On two conditions."

"Name them."

"First, Blake’s firm must commit ten percent of their management fees over the next five years to fund medical research at Lurie Children’s Hospital," I declared. "Second, I want Madison Reed to personally manage the charity liaison board—meaning she will have to spend twenty hours a week working directly alongside me in the pediatric ward, serving the families she spent years looking down upon."

A slow, brilliant, utterly delighted grin spread across Ethan’s face. He leaned in and kissed me deeply on the mouth.

"You are incredible," Ethan whispered against my lips. "Poetic justice at its finest. You're not just taking their power, Emma. You're forcing them to grow a heart."

Before I could answer, Harrison stepped forward, holding an encrypted laptop.

"Mr. Mercer," Harrison interrupted, his tone suddenly serious. "We have a situation. Conrad Vale—Sabrina Vale’s father—has just launched a press campaign. He’s hosting an emergency press conference at the Drake Hotel at two o'clock today."

"On what grounds?" Ethan asked, his voice instantly dropping back into his corporate, lethal register.

"He’s claiming that Mercer Global is using monopolistic intimidation tactics to destroy small businesses and target his real estate firm over a minor personal dispute," Harrison reported. "He’s brought in three major local news networks and invited several city council members."

Ethan let out a cold, low laugh, shaking his head. "Conrad Vale is playing with fire. He thinks he can use public pressure to force me to extend his thirty-two-million-dollar loan."

May you like

Ethan looked at me, his eyes dancing with a sharp, dangerous intellect.

"Emma," Ethan asked softly. "How would you like to attend a press conference at the Drake Hotel today?"
