Chapter 4 - The Midnight Extraction

At 2:00 AM, the storm outside Mercy General reached its peak, driving dark sheets of rain against the hospital windows.

Detective Mercer sat in the triage area, nursing his fourth cup of stale machine coffee. His cell phone buzzed violently on the desk.

He snatched it up instantly. "Talk to me, Frank."

"Ray," his analyst’s voice came through the speaker—heavy, panting, and clearly terrified. "Where are you right now?"

"I'm at Mercy General. Why?"

"Get away from that nurse, Ray," Frank whispered frantically. "I ran the name Sarah Cole through the JSOC black-budget files using my high-level clearance. The file doesn't exist under civilian records."

Mercer’s posture hardened instantly. "What do you mean it doesn't exist?"

"Her name is Captain Sarah Cole," Frank revealed, the sound of keyboard keys clattering rapidly in the background. "Former Commander of JSOC Task Force Blackwood. Decorated with two Distinguished Service Crosses. She was officially listed as 'Killed in Action' during a classified strike in Syria eighteen months ago."

Mercer dropped his coffee cup. It shattered on the linoleum floor, spilling black liquid across his boots.

"Killed in action?" Mercer gasped. "Frank, she's standing in Trauma Room 2 right now setting an IV drip!"

"She's a top-tier special operations operative, Ray!" Frank yelled into the phone. "She has eighteen confirmed long-range kills and three master certifications in urban warfare! If she's at Mercy General, she's not working as a nurse—she's hiding!"

Mercer didn't wait for another word. He drew his heavy .45 caliber service weapon from his coat, kicked open the door to Trauma Room 2, and sprinted inside.

The room was empty.

The vital monitors were humming silently, displaying flatline heart rhythms from disconnected leads. The hospital bed was empty, the sheets tossed aside, and the medical equipment tray lay overturned on the floor.

The heavy steel service door leading down to the laundry chute was hanging wide open.

"ALL UNITS!" Mercer screamed into his lapel radio, sprinting into the dark hallway. "SEAL THE BASEMENT EXITS! PATIENT IN TRAUMA 2 HAS BEEN ABDUCTED BY NURSE COLE!"

Thirty feet below the hospital, in the humid, roaring gloom of the industrial laundry facility, Sarah pushed the heavy wheeled gurney along the concrete corridor.

Julian Vance lay strapped to the gurney, his IV bag hooked to a portable pump hanging from Sarah’s neck, his pulse steady under the heavy sedation she had administered five minutes ago.

Elena walked in front, her suppressed pistol raised, clearing the dark corners of the basement.

"Ten yards to the transport loading bay!" Elena called out over the roar of the industrial laundry dryers.

Suddenly, the heavy iron fire doors at the end of the corridor exploded inward.

Four men in rain-soaked leather jackets stepped out into the humid air, carrying submachine guns.

"Leo Vance sends his regards, Elena!" the lead hitman shouted, raising his weapon.

"DOWN!" Sarah roared.

Before Elena could even lift her pistol, Sarah grabbed the heavy wheeled gurney, shoved it violently behind a concrete support pillar, and pulled a heavy steel industrial steam valve handle mounted on the wall beside her.

PSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHH!

Superheated, three-hundred-degree industrial steam erupted from the high-pressure pipes, completely filling the narrow basement corridor with a wall of scolding white vapor.

The four hitmen screamed in agony, blinded and burned by the high-pressure steam, firing their submachine guns wildly into the air.

Sarah didn't hesitate. She lunged through the white vapor like a hunting ghost.

She grabbed the lead hitman’s weapon barrel, twisted it upward, and struck his windpipe with a open-palm strike. He collapsed instantly, clutching his throat. She grabbed his falling submachine gun mid-air, spun on her heel, and fired three precise, two-round bursts through the steam.

TAK-TAK. TAK-TAK. TAK-TAK.

The remaining three hitmen dropped to the concrete floor, neutralized before they could even locate their target.

Elena stood behind the concrete pillar, her jaw dropped in absolute, speechless shock. She looked at the bloodless, mechanical precision of the young nurse standing in the steam, holding a tactical submachine gun like she had been born with it in her hands.

"You're not a nurse," Elena whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

May you like

Sarah ejected the empty magazine from the submachine gun, slapped a fresh clip into place with a sharp CLACK, and turned her amber eyes toward the dark loading bay ahead.

"I'm a nurse tonight," Sarah said calmly, grabbing the handles of the gurney once again. "Now move. We have three minutes before the police clear the stairwell."
