Chapter 5 - The Berkshire Safehouse

The black armored transport vehicle cut through the heavy midnight rain, its twin silent diesel engines propelling it west along Route 2 toward the dark, forested slopes of the Berkshire Mountains.
Inside the rear medical compartment, Sarah sat beside Julian Vance’s gurney, her eyes fixed on the digital vital signs monitor mounted to the wall.
Julian’s color was slowly returning, his blood pressure stabilizing at 115 over 75 thanks to the plasma drip Sarah had maintained throughout the high-speed escape from Boston.
Elena sat in the driver's seat, watching the rear-view video monitors mounted on the dashboard.
"We cleared the city limits without being tagged," Elena reported over the internal intercom. "Detective Mercer put out an regional alert, but Leo’s men have blocked the police radio frequencies in the South End to cover their own tracks."
"Leo isn't going to give up," Sarah said quietly, adjusting the dosage on the antibiotic IV pump. "He knows Julian has the hardware drive. As long as that drive exists, Leo’s takeover of the Vance syndicate is incomplete."
"The Berkshires estate is fortified," Elena explained. "It was built by Julian’s father thirty years ago. Reinforced steel walls, satellite jammer arrays, and an underground power grid. If we can reach the gates, we can hold out until Julian’s loyal captains assemble from Maine."
From the gurney, a low, raspy groan echoed through the small compartment.
Julian Vance’s eyelids fluttered open. His dark amber eyes—strikingly similar to Sarah’s own—searched the metallic ceiling before slowly turning toward the young woman sitting beside him in blood-stained scrubs.
"You..." Julian rasped, his voice barely a breath. "The ER nurse..."
"Stay still, Mr. Vance," Sarah ordered gently, pressing a sterile pad against his bandage to check for fresh bleeding. "You have thirty-two surgical staples in your abdomen. If you twist your torso, you'll tear the arterial graft."
Julian looked down at his chest, then at the IV line running into his arm, and finally at the hardware encryption drive sitting on the tray beside her.
A faint, exhausted smile touched his pale lips.
"The drive..." Julian whispered. "You saved it."
"I saved you," Sarah corrected him flatly. "The drive was just extra weight in your pocket."
Julian studied her face for a long, silent moment. Despite his severe physical weakness, his eyes possessed a sharp, terrifying intelligence—the eyes of a man who had spent thirty years navigating the deadliest political and criminal waters in New England.
"I know your face," Julian said suddenly, his raspy voice dropping into a low, serious register. "Two years ago... the federal maritime task force raid on the harbor in Portland. A military unit dismantled a rogue human trafficking ring operating out of my secondary dock."
Sarah’s hand froze mid-air above the IV line.
"The commander of that unit was a woman," Julian continued, watching her reaction carefully. "They called her 'The Wraith of JSOC.' The reports said she died six months later in Syria."
Sarah pulled her hands back, folding her arms across her chest, her expression turning back into an impenetrable mask of cold stone.
"Captain Sarah Cole died in Syria, Mr. Vance," she said quietly. "I'm Sarah. I work the night shift at Mercy General."
Julian looked at her for three long seconds. Then, he let out a short, painful chuckle that made him wince against his bandages.
"Then I am the luckiest dying man in Massachusetts, Captain," Julian murmured, closing his eyes once again as the sedation pulled him back into sleep.
Up ahead, through the torrential rain, the heavy wrought-iron security gates of the Berkshire estate appeared through the thick pine forest.
The gates swung open automatically, sensing the armored transport’s encrypted transponder.
The vehicle pulled up the winding stone driveway, stopping beneath the grand porte-cochère of a dark granite manor house built into the side of the mountain.
Elena killed the engine and stepped into the rear compartment.
"We're here," Elena said. "The house is secure."
Sarah stood up, pulling her shoulder bag over her neck, her amber eyes scanning the dark pine forest surrounding the estate through the transport’s tinted rear glass.
The air felt too quiet.
"Elena," Sarah whispered, her combat instincts instantly spiking. "Where are the perimeter guards?"
May you like
Elena blinked, looking at the security tablet on the wall. "There should be four men stationed at the gatehouse and two on the terrace—"
Before Elena could finish her sentence, a high-powered thermal sniper round shattered the transport’s front windshield.
