Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Dark

Leo Vance was thirty-eight years old, broad-shouldered, wearing an expensive tailored wool coat over a dark suit. He had the same sharp, aristocratic features as his brother Julian, but his eyes held none of Julian’s intelligence or restraint—only a manic, desperate hunger for power.

Flanking Leo were his two remaining personal bodyguards, their heavy submachine guns pointed directly at Sarah’s chest as she walked out of the kitchen hallway.

"So," Leo spoke, his voice echoing off the vaulted timber ceilings of the grand hall. "You're the little ER nurse who dismantled my entire strike team in Boston."

Sarah stopped ten feet away. Her tactical vest was soaked with rain, her blue scrubs stained with mud and iron, her posture completely steady despite being outgunned three to one.

"You're late, Leo," Sarah said calmly. "The police cleared your warehouse in South Boston twenty minutes ago."

Leo let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "The police don't matter, Nurse Cole! Once I open that vault and take the biometric drive from my brother's corpse, I own the entire shipping network from Maine to New York! Every judge, every politician, and every dock captain will answer to me!"

"Your brother isn't a corpse, Leo," Sarah said softly. "He's alive. And he knows you sold your family's loyalty to the O'Malley outfit in Charlestown."

Leo’s face twisted into an ugly, furious scowl. "My brother was weak! He wanted to turn our empire into a legitimate logistics firm! He wanted to stop the drug pipelines! He was going to destroy everything our father built!"

"He was trying to save your family," Sarah countered, stepping half a foot closer, her eyes calculating the precise distance between herself and the two bodyguards. "You're just a parasite feeding on a dead host."

"Kill her," Leo spat, turning his back toward the kitchen vault.

Before the two bodyguards could pull their triggers, a heavy, metallic CLACK echoed from the second-floor balcony above.

"DROP YOUR WEAPONS!" a roaring voice bellowed from the shadows.

Detective Ray Mercer stood on the second-floor landing, flanked by six heavily armed BPD Tactical Response officers and two federal agents. Their high-powered laser sights instantly painted red dots across the chests of Leo Vance and his two bodyguards.

Mercer had tracked the armored transport using the high-frequency transponder signal Sarah had intentionally left active on her emergency radio before leaving Mercy General.

Leo froze, his gold-plated pistol mid-air, his face turning the color of ash.

"Mercer..." Leo stammered, stepping back toward the vault door. "You... you have no jurisdiction in Berkshire County!"

"I have a federal warrant for multi-state racketeering, conspiracy to commit murder, and treason, Leo," Mercer declared, descending the grand staircase with his weapon raised. "Drop the gun, or my snipers will paint this rug red."

The two bodyguards lowered their submachine guns, tossing them onto the hardwood floor.

Leo stared at Mercer, then at Sarah.

In a fit of blind, cowardly madness, Leo raised his gold-plated pistol toward Sarah’s chest.

PFFT.

A single suppressed shot echoed through the room.

The bullet caught Leo in the right shoulder, shattering his collarbone, knocking the gold weapon from his grip as he collapsed to his knees, screaming in pain.

Sarah slowly lowered her hand. She had drawn her captured sidearm from behind her back and fired before Leo’s finger could even touch his trigger.

Mercer walked down the last step, kicking Leo’s fallen weapon across the floor, looking at Sarah with a mixture of profound professional respect and lingering shock.

"Nice shot, Captain Cole," Mercer noted dryly.

Sarah slowly lowered her weapon, setting it on the side table, taking a long, heavy exhale.

"I'm a nurse, Detective," Sarah said softly, pulling off her tactical vest. "I just do trauma care."

Behind them, the heavy hydraulic vault door in the kitchen clicked open.

Elena wheeled Julian Vance out into the grand hall. Julian sat upright on the gurney, his face pale, but his amber eyes burning with a bright, unshakeable triumph as he looked down at his bleeding younger brother sitting on the floor.

"It's over, Leo," Julian said quietly, his voice carrying clearly through the silent hall. "The family is coming home."
