Chapter 4 - Blood and Shadows

The truth hung between them like a drawn blade.

Liana stared at the wealthy, dangerous man standing before her. All her life, she had struggled in poverty, working three jobs just to keep food on the table, watching her infant daughter die because she couldn't afford a specialized pediatric surgeon in Boston.

And all the while, her bloodline was tied to one of the most powerful, wealthy families in North America.

“If I am a Varric,” Liana breathed, a sharp edge of anger creeping into her voice, “then where was this family when my daughter was dying in an incubator? Where was this wealth when I was begging the hospital administrators for one more week of life support?!”

Matteo didn't flinch from her rage. He absorbed it, accepting the guilt of a family legacy he had inherited.

“My father wiped out every record of Elena’s branch of the family to protect her from the Morettis,” Matteo explained quietly. “He thought he was saving her. In doing so, he isolated her so completely that when she died, none of us knew she had left behind a child. If I had known you existed, Liana... your daughter would have had the best surgeons in the world.”

Liana closed her eyes, tears spilling over her lashes and soaking into Nico’s soft baby blanket. The tragedy was unbearable. The very wealth that could have saved her little girl had been hidden behind walls of secrecy and mafia blood feuds.

Nico stirred in her arms, letting out a small, soft coo. He reached his tiny hand up, his little fingers brushing against Liana’s wet cheek, wiping away a tear.

Liana looked down at the boy. The hatred and bitterness in her chest began to melt under the innocent touch of the infant.

“Why did he stop crying when I held him?” Liana whispered, staring into Nico’s dark eyes—eyes that looked uncannily like her own.

“Because a baby knows its mother’s blood,” Matteo said grimly. “Or... because he recognizes the scent and touch of someone who shares his true genetic line. But there is a darker possibility, Liana.”

“What possibility?”

Matteo walked over to his tablet, pulling up a confidential medical report that had been emailed to him just hours before Liana’s arrival.

“I had a secondary DNA panel run on Nico last week in secret,” Matteo revealed. “The results came back yesterday. Nico’s DNA does not match my deceased wife, Isabella Moretti.”

Liana gasped. “What?! How is that possible?”

“Isabella didn't give birth to my son,” Matteo said, his voice dropping into an icy whisper. “The Morettis swapped the child in Switzerland. They gave me a baby from their own bloodline—or someone else’s—to ensure they maintained leverage over the Varric family empire.”

Matteo leaned down, looking directly into Liana’s eyes.

“Three weeks ago, an unknown woman snuck into this nursery, touched Nico, and placed your mother’s locket under his mattress,” Matteo continued. “And three weeks ago, your baby died in a hospital three hundred miles away.”

Liana’s breath hitched. A wild, terrifying thought began to take root in her mind—a thought so insane, so impossibly hopeful, that she dared not speak it aloud.

“No...” Liana whimpered, shaking her head. “No, don't say it. Don't do this to me, Matteo. My baby died. I held her cold body. I buried her!”

“Did you see the final medical report?” Matteo asked sharply. “Did you perform an independent autopsy? Or did the private clinic—a clinic heavily funded by the Moretti foundation—handle everything for you while you were blinded by grief?”

Liana felt her heart tearing open. “What are you saying?!”

“I’m saying,” Matteo said, his eyes burning with absolute determination, “that we are going to run a DNA test between you and Nico tonight.”
