Chapter 8 - The Siege of the Vault

Liana carried Clara down the winding stairs, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. The concrete walls muffled the sounds of the battle raging upstairs, but the low, rhythmic thuds of explosions and heavy gunfire still vibrated through the floorboards beneath her feet.

At the bottom of the stairs, she found the massive steel door. She punched the code—1024—into the digital keypad. The heavy mechanical locks disengaged with a deep hydraulic hiss, and the door swung open.

The panic room was spacious, equipped with leather seating, medical supplies, security monitors showing external camera feeds, and a secure bank of communications equipment.

Liana stepped inside, hit the lock button on the interior console, and watched the heavy steel bolts slide into place. They were safe.

She sat down on the sofa, holding Clara tightly. On the wall monitors, she could see the chaos unfolding across the estate.

Armored black SUVs had crashed through the wrought-iron front gates. Dozens of heavily armed men in tactical gear were exchanging gunfire with Matteo’s security team in the marble foyer.

Liana watched the screen in breathless horror as Matteo himself stepped into the frame on the main staircase. He moved with terrifying efficiency, utilizing the marble columns for cover, his firearms dropping enemy attackers with precision. He wasn't just fighting for his territory—he was fighting to give Liana and Clara time to survive.

Suddenly, one of the interior camera feeds in the subterranean hallway flared with light.

Four men in heavy tactical gear had bypassed the main security line and were moving down the basement corridor—led by an older man with graying hair, a cold, aristocratic face, and a tailored suit stained with rain.

Julian Moretti. The patriarch of the Moretti family.

Liana backed away from the monitor, her heart leaping into her throat.

Julian stopped directly in front of the heavy steel blast door of the panic room. He looked straight into the security camera lens mounted above the door and smiled a cruel, terrifying smile.

He raised a heavy military-grade radio to his mouth. A second later, his voice echoed through the internal speaker system inside the vault:

“Liana Graves,” Julian’s voice purred smoothly, dripping with malice. “Or should I call you Liana Varric? Open the door, my dear. Let us settle this like civil adults.”

Liana stood frozen, refusing to answer.

“You have something that belongs to my family’s grand strategy,” Julian continued coldly. “That baby was supposed to bridge the gap between our empires under our complete control. You were supposed to die quietly in poverty while your daughter served a higher purpose. Open the door, or my men will place breaching charges on these hinges. The blast pressure inside that small room will kill the child instantly.”
