Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

The morning sun broke through the heavy gray clouds, casting long golden beams of light across the estate grounds.

Police sirens echoed in the distance, but they were not the ordinary city police. They were federal agents coordinated by Matteo’s legal syndicate network, arriving to process the total destruction of the Moretti criminal network.

The evidence recovered from Julian Moretti’s private servers—including electronic paper trails of infant trafficking, medical falsification, and the illegal takeover attempts—was enough to ensure that Julian and every high-ranking member of his family would spend the remainder of their natural lives in federal maximum-security prisons.

In the grand study of the Varric estate, the air was finally quiet.

Liana sat on the large leather sofa, dressed in a soft, clean cream sweater, holding Clara in her lap. The baby was laughing happily, reaching her little hands up to play with a gold chain Liana was now wearing—a chain holding her mother’s silver locket.

Matteo walked into the room, wearing a clean suit, his head bandaged neatly by Dr. Harrison. He looked down at Liana and the little girl, a gentle, rare smile appearing on his face.

“The legal paperwork has been finalized,” Matteo said, leaning against his desk. “Federal records have been corrected. Her official name is Clara Elena Graves. She is legally, officially, and permanently recognized as your daughter.”

Liana let out a long, quiet breath, tears of relief shining in her eyes. “Thank you, Matteo. For everything.”

“You don't need to thank me,” Matteo replied softly. “You saved her life by trusting your instincts. And in doing so... you brought my aunt’s memory back home where it belongs.”

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a thick leather folder, placing it on the coffee table in front of Liana.

“What is this?” Liana asked.

“This is the legal deed to the Varric coastal estate in Maine,” Matteo revealed. “Along with a trust fund established in Clara’s name that guarantees her education, medical care, and financial independence for the rest of her life. It is your portion of the Varric estate—the portion your mother was denied twenty years ago.”

Liana looked at the folder, overwhelmed. “Matteo, this is too much... I can’t take all of this.”

“You are family, Liana,” Matteo said firmly, stepping closer and placing a warm hand on her shoulder. “Varrics take care of their own. You never have to scrub a floor, worry about rent, or fear for your daughter’s safety ever again.”
