Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Arthur’s Legacy

The morning sun broke over the pine trees surrounding Claire’s home, but there was no light inside the kitchen. Claire sat at the table surrounded by cold coffee cups and spread-out legal papers.

Her phone had been ringing off the hook since 6:00 AM. Calls from confused wedding guests, angry caterers demanding final payment, and endless text messages from Daniel, ranging from desperate pleas for forgiveness to subtle, threatening reminders about "legal obligations."

A sharp knock at the back door made Claire jump. She picked up a heavy brass candlestick from the sideboard and walked cautiously toward the kitchen window.

Standing on the back porch was a tall man in a charcoal suit, holding a leather briefcase. He had graying hair, sharp blue eyes, and an expression of extreme urgency.

"Claire!" the man called through the glass, keeping his hands visible. "It’s Marcus Vance. Arthur’s attorney from Zurich. Please, open the door. We don't have much time."

Claire unlocked the door, keeping the brass candlestick raised. "Prove who you are."

Marcus reached into his breast pocket with two fingers, pulled out a silver business card, and handed it to her along with a photograph. The photograph showed Marcus, Arthur, and a pregnant Claire standing on a balcony in Lucerne eight years ago.

Claire’s breath hitched. "Arthur mentioned you once... he said if anything ever happened to him, I should only trust a man named Vance."

"And you should have called me four years ago, Claire," Marcus said solemnly, stepping into the kitchen and closing the door behind him. "Arthur put a ironclad non-disclosure agreement on his estate to protect you and Lily from the vultures in his former firm. But Daniel Miller found out."

"How?" Claire asked, sinking into a kitchen chair. "How did Daniel even know who Arthur was?"

"Eleanor Miller," Marcus revealed, setting his briefcase on the table. "Thirty years ago, before Arthur met you, Eleanor was a junior partner at the investment firm that tried to steal Arthur’s early prototypes. She lost her license for insider trading. She’s been tracking Arthur’s assets for a decade. When Arthur died in that tragic accident, Eleanor realized Arthur’s widow was sitting on a fortune she didn't even know existed."

Marcus opened his briefcase and pulled out a tablet screen showing financial wire transfers.

"Daniel didn't meet you by accident at that charity gala two years ago, Claire," Marcus said quietly. "He spent six months studying your routines, your grief, your child's favorite foods, and your financial vulnerabilities. It was a corporate acquisition disguised as a romance."

Claire buried her face in her hands. The embarrassment was suffocating. Every gentle word, every late-night conversation, every hot chocolate Daniel had brought to Lily—it was all a calculated performance to gain control of Arthur’s ninety-five million dollars.

"What was going to happen after the wedding, Marcus?" Claire asked, her voice dangerously quiet. "What did his mother mean when she said 'the girl is the only problem'?"

Marcus’s face grew grave. He slid a second document across the table.

"Once you signed the marriage certificate, Daniel would automatically become the legal co-guardian of Lily’s trust," Marcus explained. "The document Lily stole from his briefcase yesterday wasn't just a trust transfer. It was an application for institutional conservatorship."

Claire stared at him. "Institutional... what?"

"They were going to have Lily diagnosed with severe childhood psychosis," Marcus said softly. "They had already bribed a private psychiatric facility in upstate New York. Three days after your honeymoon, Lily was going to be committed under Daniel’s authority as her stepfather. They were going to isolate her so she could never challenge the trust transfers."

Claire felt a cold, sharp rage settle into her bones. The confusion and hurt vanished, replaced by an absolute, terrifying clarity.

"They touched my daughter," Claire whispered, her eyes turning to ice. "And they planned to steal her life."

"Claire," Marcus warned gently. "They have top-tier lawyers. Eleanor has already filed an emergency petition in civil court claiming you are mentally unstable after abandoning the wedding, demanding temporary custody of Lily based on Daniel’s 'role' as her co-habitating guardian."

Claire stood up slowly. "Then let's give them a fight."
