Chapter 8 - The Trap Springs

Eleanor’s face twisted into an expression of pure rage. She wiped the torn paper from her mink coat. "You stupid, arrogant fool! You just destroyed your daughter's future!"
Eleanor turned to her lead attorney. "File the criminal fraud complaint with the Federal Auditor immediately! Release the laboratory logs!"
"Go ahead, Eleanor," Marcus Vance said quietly from the end of the table. "Release them."
Eleanor froze, frowning. "What?"
Marcus reached into his pocket, pulled out a small remote control, and pressed a button. A large projection screen descended behind the trustees' table, flickering to life.
On the screen appeared an old, black-and-white video recording dated November 14th, 1996.
The video showed a young Eleanor Miller standing in a private laboratory, opening a wall safe, and removing a stack of blue leather-bound notebooks stamped with Arthur Vance’s personal initials. She was caught on high-grade security camera footage taking the notebooks and replacing them with forged duplicates.
A voiceover echoed through the boardroom speakers—the voice of Arthur Vance, recorded shortly before his death:
“If Eleanor Miller ever presents laboratory logs claiming my work was stolen from her firm, let this video serve as permanent record. On November 14th, 1996, Eleanor Miller committed corporate burglary against my personal estate. The original, notarized patents were filed with the Swiss Federal Institute three weeks prior to her theft...”
Eleanor dropped her leather clutch. Her knees buckled slightly, and she had to grip the back of a chair to stay upright.
"Arthur... Arthur recorded that?" she whispered, her voice cracking for the first time in thirty years.
"Arthur knew you were a thief, Eleanor," Marcus said, stepping forward. "He knew you stole his early notes. He let you keep those forged duplicates for thirty years, knowing that the moment you tried to use them in a court of law, you would be walking directly into a trap for international perjury, corporate espionage, and grand larceny."
The heavy double doors of the boardroom opened once more.
This time, four officers of the Swiss Federal Police, accompanied by two agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, stepped into the room.
The lead Swiss officer stepped up to Eleanor Miller, pulling a set of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Eleanor Miller," the officer announced in precise English. "You are under arrest by order of the Swiss Federal Prosecutor for international corporate fraud, extortion, and attempted theft of state-protected intellectual property."
The second officer turned to Daniel Miller, clicking handcuffs around his wrists. "Daniel Miller, you are under arrest under an international extradition warrant issued by the State of Connecticut for felony child abuse, extortion, and conspiracy to commit fraud."
Daniel began to hyperventilate, tears spilling down his face. "Mother! Help me! You said this was foolproof! You said she was just a dumb widow!"
"Shut up! Shut up!" Eleanor screamed, thrashing against the officers as they forced her hands behind her back. "I made you, Arthur! You were nothing without my firm! NOTHING!"
Claire walked up to Daniel as the officers pulled him toward the door. Daniel looked at her, his face pale, his eyes filled with pathetic, sniveling desperation.
"Claire... please," Daniel whimpered. "I was just doing what she told me... I loved you, Claire! You know I loved you!"
Claire looked down at the man who had pretended to be her savior for two years.
May you like
"You never loved me, Daniel," Claire said, her voice completely free of hatred, leaving only a cold, absolute pity. "You didn't even know me."
She turned her back on him as the federal agents dragged Daniel and his mother out of the boardroom, their hysterical arguments fading down the long, carpeted corridor until there was only silence.
