Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Atlantic

At 2:00 AM, a heavy fog rolled over the commercial docks of New London, Connecticut.
A non-descript black van pulled up to the edge of Pier 14, its headlights turned off. Claire stepped out first, wearing a dark coat and hat, holding Lily securely in her arms. Behind them, two former military security personnel hired by Marcus’s firm scanned the surrounding shipping containers with night-vision goggles.
Floating quietly in the dark water was a ninety-foot private motor yacht, its hull painted matte black, its engines humming at a low purr.
"Is everything clear?" Marcus whispered, stepping out from the driver's side.
"Perimeter is clean, sir," the lead guard reported. "No tracking devices found on the van. We swept the route twice."
They walked quickly down the floating dock toward the yacht's gangway. Claire held Lily tight against her chest, the child’s face buried in her neck.
"Mommy," Lily whispered, "are we going on a boat?"
"Yes, baby," Claire murmured, kissing her hair. "We're going on a trip to finish what Daddy started for us."
Just as Claire reached the deck of the vessel, a sharp spotlight cut through the fog from the top of a nearby storage building, illuminating the yacht in blinding white light.
"Claire Vance!" a voice boomed over a bullhorn from the edge of the pier.
Claire turned, shielding her eyes. Standing at the edge of the dock, surrounded by four men in heavy dark coats, was Eleanor Miller. Beside her stood Daniel, holding a manila folder and a handheld satellite phone.
"You can't leave the country, Claire!" Eleanor called out, her voice dripping with venomous satisfaction. "We filed a federal border alert an hour ago! Any vessel assisting you in evading a federal civil subpoena will be seized by the Coast Guard!"
Marcus stepped to the railing, his face calm in the glare of the spotlight. "You're five minutes too late, Eleanor!"
"Am I?" Eleanor sneered, raising her phone. "I have the maritime injunction right here, signed by a federal magistrate! If that boat leaves the dock, you will all be arrested for international parental abduction!"
Suddenly, the deep, heavy blast of a ship horn echoed across the harbor.
A dark gray vessel bearing the insignia of the United States Coast Guard emerged from the fog, pulling alongside the pier. Searchlights snapped on from the cutter, blinding Eleanor’s men.
"Vessel on Pier 14, stand down!" a voice boomed over the military loudspeaker.
Daniel panicked, dropping his folder. "Mother! The Coast Guard is here! They're going to arrest us!"
"Shut up, you idiot!" Eleanor hissed, turning to face the uniformed officers marching off the cutter. "Officers! I am Eleanor Miller! I filed the border injunction against that yacht!"
The lead Coast Guard commander stepped off the gangway, flanked by four armed tactical officers. He walked past Eleanor without looking at her and stopped before Marcus Vance, saluting crisply.
"Mr. Vance," the commander said loudly. "We received the diplomatic clearance order from the Department of State ten minutes ago. This vessel is operating under official Swiss diplomatic escort status for the transport of a international corporate minor."
Eleanor’s face turned gray. "Diplomatic escort?! That's impossible! She’s an American citizen!"
"Arthur Vance registered his patents under dual diplomatic protection through the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology six years ago, Mrs. Miller," Marcus called down from the deck with a tight, cold smile. "Lily Vance is a registered beneficiary of the Swiss Federal Republic. Your civil injunction isn't worth the paper it's printed on."
Marcus turned to the captain of the yacht. "Cast off the lines."
As the heavy ropes were thrown clear and the yacht’s engines roared to life, pulling away into the dark fog, Claire stood at the stern railing.

She looked down at Daniel and Eleanor standing helpless under the Coast Guard's glaring searchlights, being questioned by federal agents about their illegal border filing.
Lily lifted her small hand from Claire's shoulder and waved a quiet, silent goodbye to the man who had tried to destroy their lives.
