Chapter 2 - The Bloodline's Secret

Within twenty minutes, the Sovereign’s presidential suite was converted into an emergency medical station.
Dr. Julian Vance, the Valente family's private surgeon and veterinarian, worked feverishly under bright portable lights. Rowan stood at the foot of the stainless-steel table, her fingers intertwined with Lena’s, while Ezra stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out over the rain-slicked skyline of Manhattan.
"He’s stabilized," Dr. Vance announced, pulling off his surgical gloves with a sharp snap. "Severe malnutrition, broken ribs, and old chemical burns around his neck, but Brutus is a fighter. Give him a month of heavy antibiotics and proper care, and he'll be back to his full eighty pounds."
Rosie let out a long, quiet breath she seemed to have been holding for hours. She walked up to the table and rested her cheek against the dog's large, scarred head. Brutus let out a low, contented sigh, his tail giving two weak thumps against the padding.
"Dr. Vance," Ezra said without turning around. "The collar."
The doctor picked up the dirt-caked leather collar he had cut from the dog’s neck and placed it on a velvet tray. "The brass crest is authentic, Don Ezra. But look at the inside lining."
Ezra walked over, picking up the heavy leather strap. With a small pocket knife, he slit the inner lining of the collar.
A tiny, silver micro-chip—not an animal identification tag, but an encrypted military-grade flash drive—slipped out onto the dark velvet.
Lena stepped back slightly, recognizing the danger in the room. This wasn't hotel business anymore. This was the dark, lethal underworld of the Valente syndicate.
"Eight years ago," Ezra said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy tone as he stared at the flash drive, "my wife Colette was ambushed on the West Side Highway. The police said it was a rival family—the Morettis. They said Brutus was killed in the crossfire and thrown into the Hudson River."
He looked at the flash drive, his jaw clenched tight enough to crack marble.
"Colette knew they were coming for her," Ezra whispered. "She hid the syndicate’s master ledger inside Brutus’s collar before she pushed Rosie into the floorboards of the car. Brutus didn't run away. He was taken."
"Taken by who, Papa?" Rosie asked quietly.
Ezra looked at his daughter, his eyes burning with a dark, ancient fire. "By someone who wanted to destroy us from the inside, mia cara. Someone who has been sitting at my dinner table for eight years."
Before he could continue, the heavy double doors of the penthouse burst open.
A tall man in an expensive navy suit strode in, flanked by three armed bodyguards. It was Dominic Valente—Ezra’s younger brother and the second-in-command of the Valente crime family.
"Ezra!" Dominic boomed, his face red with simulated panic. "I heard what happened in the lobby! The staff is talking nonsense about Colette’s old dog returning? Is it true? Where did Rosie find it?"
Dominic’s eyes scanned the room, landing on the dog on the medical table, then on the velvet tray where the flash drive lay exposed. For a fraction of a second, a flash of pure, unadulterated terror crossed Dominic’s face.

Ezra caught that fraction of a second. He did not miss a single detail.
"Hello, brother," Ezra said smoothly, picking up the flash drive and slipping it into his vest pocket. "Yes. It seems Colette’s dog survived. And he brought back a ghost."
