Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

Within forty-eight hours, the Blackwood Estate on Beacon Hill was transformed into a fortress.
Lily was moved from Mass General under high-security escort to the estate's private medical wing, outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment and staffed by an elite team of independent doctors who answered directly to Dr. Thorne. Her recovery was swift once the neuro-toxin was flushed from her system, though her legs remained weak from months of chemical immobility.
Joey had also been brought to the estate. Robert had assigned him a luxurious guest suite on the third floor, given him a fresh wardrobe, and sent his personal security team to handle Joey’s uncle in South Boston. When the uncle was offered a quarter-million dollars to legally surrender guardianship of Joey to Robert Blackwood, the man had signed the papers without asking a single question.
It was a rainy Thursday morning. Inside the grand library, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling mahogany shelves filled with leather-bound books, Robert stood before a massive digital whiteboard. Sitting on the leather sofas were his inner circle: his chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance (no relation to Arthur Vance), his head of security, Captain Frank Vance (a former Navy SEAL), and Dr. Thorne.
Joey sat in a large wingback chair, sipping hot chocolate while holding Lily’s hand. Lily was sitting in a wheelchair beside him, wrapped in a cashmere blanket, her color returning, her blue-dyed hair roots showing against her pale blond locks.
"Arthur Vance knows something went wrong at the hospital," Marcus reported, opening a thick Manila folder. "When Rebecca didn't report back and failed to attend the Vance Global board meeting yesterday, Arthur panicked. He’s liquidating assets and trying to transfer thirty million dollars into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands."
"He knows we have Rebecca," Robert said, his face carved from marble. "What about the drug?"
"Dr. Thorne successfully isolated Compound 904," Marcus continued. "We have the clinical lab notes, the illicit manufacturing receipts from a shell company in New Jersey, and the physical evidence from Lily’s IV line. It’s a slam-dunk criminal charge for attempted murder, conspiracy, and medical malpractice."
"No," Robert said coldly, turning around to face his team.
Everyone in the room looked shocked.
"No, sir?" Marcus asked. "Robert, we can put Arthur Vance and his entire executive team in federal prison for the rest of their lives!"
"Prison is too quick for what they did to my daughter," Robert said, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with terrifying malice. "Arthur Vance tried to steal my child and my company. If I hand him over to the FBI now, his lawyers will tie this up in bail motions and corporate appeals for five years. He will sit in a comfortable white-collar facility while his assets remain intact."
Robert walked over to the desk and picked up a crystal glass of whiskey, swirling the amber liquid.
"I don't just want him in prison," Robert continued. "I want him ruined. I want every stock, every property, every bank account, and every shell company owned by Vance Global stripped away until he is penniless, discredited, and begging on the very streets Joey came from. Then, and only then, will I turn him over to the police."
Joey looked up from his hot chocolate, his dark eyes fixed on Robert. "How are you gonna do that, Mr. Blackwood?"
Robert smiled—a predatory, terrifying expression. "By playing his own game, Joey. Arthur Vance thinks he’s a wolf because he preys on the weak. But he forgot that I built this city."
Robert turned to Marcus. "Call an emergency shareholder meeting of Blackwood Enterprises for Monday morning. Announce to the press that I am making a public statement regarding a major corporate acquisition."
"Which acquisition, sir?"
"Vance Global," Robert declared. "I am going to execute a hostile takeover. I will short their stock, buy up their debt through proxy funds, and bankrupt his empire before the opening bell rings on Friday."
"Dad," Lily said softly, her small voice breaking through the heavy tension in the room.
Robert’s harsh expression softened instantly as he knelt beside her wheelchair. "Yes, sweetie?"
"What about Rebecca?" Lily asked, her eyes filled with a painful mixture of betrayal and lingering childhood attachment. "Is she... is she still in the house?"
Robert touched his daughter’s cheek gently. "She’s under guard in the North Shore estate, Lily. She won't ever hurt you again."
"Can I see her?" Lily asked.
Robert frowned. "Why would you want to see her after what she did?"
Lily looked down at her hands, then turned her head to look at Joey, who nodded at her encouragingly.
"Because," Lily said, her voice growing firm, "I want her to look me in the eye when she loses everything. I want her to know that the boy she called a 'street brat' is the reason her evil plan failed."

Robert stared at his daughter, seeing for the first time not just a fragile twelve-year-old girl, but a true Blackwood—resilient, fiercely intelligent, and unwilling to be a victim ever again.
"All right," Robert said, standing up. "We leave for North Shore tonight."
