Chapter 4 - Confrontation at North Shore

The North Shore mansion sat on a secluded cliff overlooking the dark, turbulent waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Rain hammered relentlessly against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows as Robert’s convoy of dark SUVs pulled up the winding driveway.
Inside the estate's master bedroom, Rebecca was pacing the floor like a caged animal. Her silk blouse was rumpled, her hair disheveled, and the pearls around her neck felt like a lead chokechain. For two days, she had been cut off from the world—no phone, no internet, guarded by silent men with weapons hidden under their jackets.
The heavy oak door unlocked with a sharp click.
Rebecca whipped around, her eyes wide with frantic hope, expecting her father's lawyers or federal agents. Instead, Robert walked into the room.
Behind him stepped Joey, pushing Lily’s wheelchair.
Rebecca froze, her breath catching in her throat. She stared at Lily, who was wrapped in a black coat, her blue-dyed hair framing a pale but resolute face.
"Lily..." Rebecca whispered, taking a step forward, but Captain Vance immediately stepped between them, his hand resting casually on his hip.
"Stay where you are, Rebecca," Robert commanded.
"Robert, please!" Rebecca sobbed, falling to her knees on the Persian rug. "You have to help me! My father... he’s frantic! He knows you’ve locked me up! He’s going to release press statements claiming you’ve kidnapped me!"
"Let him," Robert replied calmly, leaning against the doorframe. "In fact, I’m counting on it. Public panic will drive Vance Global’s stock price down by fifteen percent before the market opens tomorrow."
Rebecca looked at Lily, tears streaming down her contoured cheeks. "Lily, baby, tell your father I loved you! I was desperate! My father told me our family would be ruined, that we would lose everything! I didn't want you to die, I swear! I just needed you to stay asleep until..."
"Until you could take my mother’s money?" Lily interrupted, her voice ringing out clear and cold through the room.
Rebecca flinched as if she had been slapped.
"My mother built Blackwood Enterprises with my dad," Lily said, her knuckles turning white on the armrests of her wheelchair. "She spent her life helping charities, building children's hospitals, and creating something good. And you tried to steal it to save a company that makes fake medicine to trick sick people."
Lily pointed at Joey, who stood beside her, calm and silent.
"You called Joey a delinquent," Lily continued. "You told the doctors to throw him out like trash. But he has more honor in his pinky finger than you and your father have in your whole family. He risked everything to save me, while you sacrificed me for paper and stock options."
Rebecca stared at the twelve-year-old girl, suddenly realizing that the docile, quiet stepdaughter she thought she had manipulated was completely gone.
"What are you going to do to me?" Rebecca whispered, turning her terrified eyes to Robert.
Robert pulled a thick document from his coat pocket and tossed it onto the coffee table in front of her.
"That is a full confession," Robert said. "It details your involvement in the attempted murder of Lily Blackwood, your financial collusion with Vance Global, and your illegal administration of unapproved compounds."
"I won't sign it," Rebecca spat, her voice suddenly turning sharp with desperate defiance. "If I sign that, I go to prison for twenty years! My father will destroy you, Robert! He has connections in Washington, in the DOJ!"
Robert took a small silver recorder from his pocket and pressed play.
Arthur Vance’s voice filled the room, cold and calculating, recorded from a intercepted phone line just hours prior:
"If Rebecca gets caught, cut her off completely. Tell the press she was acting alone due to emotional instability. We cannot let this touch Vance Global's valuation before the European merger closes. If she has to take the fall, she takes the fall."
Rebecca gasped, her blood running cold as she listened to her own father sacrifice her without a second thought.
"Your father abandoned you the moment he realized I knew the truth," Robert said softly. "You are nothing to him but a loose end, Rebecca."
Rebecca slumped onto the floor, staring at the recorder in absolute silence. The silence stretched for several agonizing seconds before she reached out a trembling hand, picked up a pen from the desk, and signed her name on every page of the confession.
When she finished, she tossed the pen aside and buried her face in her hands, weeping softly.
Robert picked up the signed documents, handed them to Marcus, and looked down at his former wife one last time.
"Tomorrow morning, Vance Global falls," Robert said. "And when the bell rings, the police will be waiting outside your father's office."

Robert turned to Joey and Lily. "Let’s go home."
As Joey pushed Lily’s wheelchair back down the hallway, Lily looked back over her shoulder at the open door. Rebecca was left alone in the vast, empty room, weeping in the shadows of the mansion she had sacrificed her soul to keep.
