Chapter 9 - Trapping the Viper

The rain beat a steady rhythm against the windows of an abandoned industrial warehouse near the South Boston piers—the exact district where Joey had spent his childhood scavenging for food.

At 11:00 PM, a black town car pulled into the rusting structure.

Dr. James Richardson stepped out of the vehicle, clutching a leather briefcase to his chest. He looked paranoid, constantly glancing over his shoulder into the pitch-black shadows of the warehouse.

"Where are you?" Richardson yelled into the dark, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "I brought the remaining cash files! Now give me the original server keys so I can flee to South America!"

From the darkness, a figure stepped into the pale beam of a single overhead streetlight.

It wasn't his thug with the scar.

It was fourteen-year-old Joey Fletcher-Blackwood, standing tall in a dark wool coat, his hands resting calmly in his pockets.

Richardson froze. "You...? What are you doing here, kid?"

"Looking for answers, Doctor," Joey said, his voice echoing with absolute calmness. "My mother, Mary Fletcher. Patient 408. You signed the order that killed her twelve years ago."

Richardson let out a nervous, mocking laugh. "Your mother was a poor woman in a county clinic, boy! She was nobody! Do you have any idea how medical progress works? Thousands of people like her had to be tested so the rich could live longer! It was business!"

"It wasn't business," another voice resonated from the shadows.

Robert Blackwood stepped into the light beside Joey, accompanied by Captain Vance and four armed security contractors.

Richardson backed away toward his car, his hand reaching inside his coat pocket. "Stay back, Blackwood! I have friends in the state prosecutor's office! If you touch me, I’ll release files that will tear your company apart!"

"You mean these files?" Lily walked out from behind a row of shipping containers, holding a bright red tablet displaying the live cloud feed of Richardson’s personal encrypted server. "We seized your remote drive an hour ago, Dr. Richardson. Your 'friends' in the prosecutor's office were arrested twenty minutes ago by federal agents."

Richardson’s face turned white as chalk. He pulled a small, compact handgun from his jacket, pointing it directly at Robert.

"I won't go to prison!" Richardson screamed, his hand shaking violently on the trigger. "I spent my life building Vance’s medical research! I won't rot in a cell because of a street kid and a spoiled rich girl!"

Joey didn't flinch. He didn't step back. He stepped directly in front of Robert and Lily, shielding them with his own body.

"Put the gun down, Richardson," Joey said, his voice dropping into a register of sheer authority that sounded impossibly like Robert Blackwood himself. "You thought poor people were invisible. You thought my mom didn't matter because she had no money, no badge, and no power. But her son is standing right here."

Richardson looked into Joey’s eyes. He saw no fear, no hesitation—only the fierce, uncompromising intelligence of a boy who had survived the worst the world could throw at him and had come out stronger.

Click.

The red laser sights of four tactical rifles suddenly illuminated Richardson’s chest from the upper rafters of the warehouse.

"Drop the weapon, Dr. Richardson," Captain Vance commanded coldly from the shadows. "You have three seconds before my team clears the threat."

Richardson looked down at the four red dots on his chest. His hand trembled so violently that the gun slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly onto the wet concrete.

Two FBI agents stepped out from the perimeter, kicking the gun away and forcing Richardson to his knees, locking steel cuffs around his wrists.

As Richardson was pulled to his feet, Joey stepped up to him, looking the disgraced doctor straight in the eyes.

"My mother’s name was Mary Fletcher," Joey said softly. "Remember it while you spend the rest of your life in a cage."
