Chapter 9 - The Trial of Whispers

Six months after the attack on the estate, the Federal District Court of New York was packed with reporters, politicians, and prosecutors. Salvatore Rossi and the remaining members of the Volk syndicate sat at the defense table under heavy security.
Salvatore remained cunning. Using massive offshore funds, he had hired top-tier defense attorneys to shift all charges of money laundering and smuggling onto Dominic, claiming his nephew was the true mastermind behind the underground empire.
"Your Honor," Salvatore’s lead attorney declared smoothly. "All audio recordings and translated evidence presented by the prosecution are inadmissible. They were gathered illegally by a woman with no official certifications or legal standing as an interpreter."
He cast a dismissive glance toward Maeve, who sat at the prosecution's advisory table beside Dominic.
The judge slammed his gavel down. "The court calls the prosecution’s linguistic advisor, Mrs. Maeve Rossi, to the stand."
Maeve stood up. Dressed in a tailored dark navy suit, she walked to the witness stand with quiet grace and unshakeable confidence. Gone was the exhausted cleaning woman in a faded apron; standing before the court was the Vice-Chairwoman and Chief Strategist of Rossi Global.
"Mrs. Rossi," the prosecutor asked, "the defense claims you lack the formal qualifications to translate recordings involving eight languages and complex regional dialects. How do you respond?"
Maeve smiled faintly. She looked directly at Salvatore and spoke.
Without referencing a single note, Maeve began breaking down every wiretapped recording in real time. She dissected Salvatore’s archaic Calabrian dialect, Gregory Volk’s Odessa prison slang, and the coded jargon used by Albanian arms brokers to evade coast guard patrols.
She did not merely translate word-for-word; she explained the historical context, hidden grammatical structures, and underworld subtext behind every sentence. When official linguists from the Italian Embassy and FBI specialists present in the courtroom confirmed her translations were 100% accurate, a breathless silence fell over the court.
Salvatore’s glasses slipped from his trembling hands. His lawyer sat back, completely speechless.

"Language does not live on diplomas hanging on a wall," Maeve stated clearly to the court. "Language is a mirror of human nature. And the defendant’s own words have convicted him."
Faced with the undeniable evidence Maeve provided, the judge sentenced Salvatore Rossi to life imprisonment without parole. The final threat to the Rossi family was eradicated forever.
