Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

The digital fortress that protected the Vale syndicate’s financial empire was considered impenetrable, but it had one fatal flaw: it was built by men who believed loyalty could be bought with fear, whereas Adrian Vale had just learned that loyalty was earned through blood and protection.

Seated at his home office desk late that night, the glow of three high-resolution monitors illuminated the dark room. Vance stood beside him, scrolling through a cascading wall of decrypted banking ledgers, shell corporation registries, and encrypted audio transcripts.

"We have them," Vance said, tapping a highlighted file on the screen. "Every single offshore account Ethan used to fund the surveillance teams in Europe. Furthermore, we found the paper trail linking Margaret to the illegal asset stripping of Claire’s personal estate following her supposed death."

"Send it to the Commission," Adrian said calmly, his fingers resting on the edge of the mahogany desk.

Vance paused, looking over at him in surprise. "To the Commission? Boss, if we hand this over, it’s going to trigger a total civil war within the upper echelons of the syndicate. Margaret’s loyalists will fight back."

"Let them," Adrian said without a flicker of hesitation. "My mother built her power on secrecy and backroom executions. If the syndicate wants a leader, they can choose between a dynasty built on paranoia and betrayal, or a future built on absolute transparency and strength. Send the files to every regional boss simultaneously. Give them twelve hours to decide where their allegiance lies."

Vance smiled faintly, a look of profound respect crossing his weathered features. "Consider it broadcasted. And what about Ethan?"

"Let him run," Adrian replied coldly. "A man like Ethan without money, power, or our protection won't survive forty-eight hours on the streets of Chicago."

Just as Vance turned to execute the command, the heavy oak door of the office pushed open just an inch. A small tuft of dark hair peeked through the gap, followed by a pair of enormous gray-blue eyes.

Adrian’s expression instantly softened. He held up a hand to pause Vance, then stood up and walked over to the door, pulling it open.

Skye stood there in her oversized white shirt, dragging a heavy stuffed rabbit nearly as big as she was across the hardwood floor. Behind her, Ivy stood rubbing her eyes, sleepily clutching a small blue blanket.

"We can't sleep," Ivy whispered, her voice thick with exhaustion. "The wind is too loud."

Adrian didn't hesitate. He scooped both girls up into his arms, one on each side, resting their sleepy heads against his broad shoulders.

"Come on," Adrian murmured, walking away from the glowing screens and the war for the syndicate. "Let’s go back to bed. I'll read you a story."

Vance watched them leave the room, shaking his head with a quiet chuckle. The most feared man in the underworld had just been completely disarmed by two toddlers. And for the first time in his life, Vance knew the syndicate was in the safest hands possible.
