Chapter 7 - The Cleansing Fire

With Margaret’s faction dismantled and Ethan exiled to the northern timber camps, the internal rot that had plagued the Vale syndicate for decades was finally excised. But Adrian knew that as long as the physical reminders of his mother’s control remained standing, the past would never truly be buried.

The old Chicago estate—the sprawling, gothic fortress where Margaret had raised them on a diet of paranoia, betrayal, and violence—stood empty and abandoned on the outskirts of the city.

Three days after the Commission’s ruling, Adrian stood before its wrought-iron gates as a convoy of fuel trucks and demolition equipment rolled onto the pristine lawns.

Vance stood beside him, holding a heavy tactical lighter. "Are you sure about this, Boss? That property has been in the family for three generations. It’s worth millions."

"It’s a tomb," Adrian said, his voice flat and resolute. "Everything built in that house was forged in cruelty. I want it gone. Every stone, every beam, every memory."

"Done," Vance said, nodding to the demolition crew.

Within minutes, industrial hoses sprayed accelerant across the grand hallways and velvet-lined parlors of the gothic mansion. Vance struck the match and tossed it through the shattered French doors.

The flames caught instantly, roaring upward in a massive, furious pillar of fire and thick black smoke that pierced the gray autumn sky. Adrian watched silently as the symbol of his family’s dark history burned to ash before his eyes. There was no sadness in his chest—only a profound, liberating emptiness.

When he returned to Lake Geneva that evening, the air felt cleaner.

Inside the kitchen, the scent of baking bread and melted butter had replaced the smell of cedar and ancient dust. Claire’s old recipe book lay open on the counter, propped up against a ceramic bowl.

Ivy and Skye were sitting at the kitchen island, flour dusted across their noses and cheeks, laughing as they tried to roll out dough with miniature wooden rolling pins Adrian had ordered online.

Adrian slipped off his black coat, hung it neatly by the door, and rolled up the sleeves of his crisp white shirt. He walked into the kitchen, picked up a pinch of flour, and lightly flicked it at Ivy’s nose.

Ivy gasped, her eyes going wide before she giggled and retaliated with a handful of flour right to Adrian’s chest.

Skye shrieked with laughter, clapping her hands together as a full-scale flour war broke out across the pristine kitchen tiles.

Adrian caught both of them in his arms, lifting them up into the air as they squealed with delight, spinning them around until their laughter echoed off the high vaulted ceilings.

For the first time in his life, the mafia boss of Lake Geneva realized he didn't need an empire to feel powerful. He just needed this laughter, this warmth, and these two small miracles who had brought his wife’s memory back to life.
