Chapter 8 - Unlocking the Past

The following week, with the estate fully secured and the syndicate operating under a peaceful new accord, Adrian finally took the small brass key from the silver keepsake box and drove the girls into downtown Geneva.

The Geneva International Bank was a quiet, imposing limestone building overlooking the lake. When Adrian walked through the revolving glass doors holding Ivy’s hand while Skye rode comfortably on his shoulders, the bank manager immediately recognized him, turning pale and rushing out from behind the mahogany counter with a profuse bow.

"Mr. Vale," the manager stammered, wringing his hands. "We weren't expecting you. How can we assist the Vale estate today?"

"Safety deposit box 412," Adrian said calmly, placing the small brass key on the counter.

"Right this way, sir. Right this way."

The manager led them down into the heavily reinforced subterranean vault, unlocking the heavy steel door of room 412. Inside lay a single, velvet-lined metal box. The manager discreetly excused himself, leaving Adrian alone with the girls in the quiet, climate-controlled sanctuary.

Adrian inserted the key and turned it. The heavy lid lifted smoothly.

Inside sat a thick stack of documents, a flash drive, a bundle of handwritten letters addressed to him, and a small photograph he had never seen before.

He sat down at the small mahogany viewing desk inside the vault, lifting the photograph out first.

It was a picture of Claire, taken in a sunlit garden somewhere in the Swiss Alps, heavily pregnant with the twins, smiling radiantly at the camera. On the back, she had written in her familiar cursive: “They have your eyes, Adrian. And they will know your heart.”

Ivy leaned against his knee, peering up at the photograph. "Is that Mommy?"

"Yes," Adrian whispered, his throat tightening with emotion. He lifted Ivy onto his lap, letting her and Skye look at the stack of letters.

"She wrote these for you," Adrian said softly, gently stroking Ivy’s hair. "Every single day she was away, she wrote down a story about you and Skye. She wanted you to know how much she loved you, even when she couldn't be here."

Skye reached out, touching the corner of the photograph with a tiny finger. "Did she go to heaven because she loved us too much?"

Adrian pulled both girls into his arms, resting his chin against their soft hair. "She went to heaven because she was an angel who saved you," Adrian said, his voice steady and resolute. "And she left you here so we could take care of each other."

He picked up the flash drive and the bundle of letters, placing them carefully back into the keepsake box alongside the photograph. The past no longer felt like a chain dragging him down into the dark; it was a foundation, solid and enduring.
