Chapter 10 - Dawn on the Lake

Three months later, the Chicago sun rose over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in brilliant hues of pink and gold.
In a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood far from the soot of the harbor and the noise of the loop, a small, beautiful house sat with a fresh coat of white paint. In the front yard, June and Jade were laughing, chasing a golden retriever puppy through the morning dew. Their laughter was bright, free of the shaking fear that had once made their teeth click.
On the front porch, Evelyn sat with a cup of hot tea, watching her daughters with a peaceful, radiant smile.
A black sedan pulled up to the curb. Nathan Russo stepped out, dressed in his usual charcoal suit, but without his usual armed escort. He walked up the stone path, holding a small cardboard box.
"Nathan!" the twins squealed, abandoning the puppy to run and wrap their arms around his legs.
Nathan knelt down, letting them hug him, a soft, rare warmth in his eyes. He opened the box, revealing a beautifully baked chocolate cake from Tessa at Bellini’s. "A housewarming gift," he said.
Evelyn walked down the porch steps, her eyes shining with gratitude. She reached out and gently placed her hand over Nathan’s. "We have a life because of you, Nathan. I don't think we can ever thank you enough."
"You don't have to," Nathan said quietly, looking at the girls who were now happily trying to feed a piece of cake to their puppy. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small plastic lucky charm Jade had given him, handing it back to her. "This worked. No more bad dreams."

Jade took the charm and smiled, her eyes bright with hope.
Nathan stood up, looked at the peaceful home, and felt a quiet satisfaction he had never known in his life of crime. For the first time, he hadn't just survived the storm—he had stopped it. He walked back to his car, ready to face whatever the city held next, knowing that some wars were absolutely worth winning.
