Chapter 2 - The Echo of the Marine Bell

The warehouse was drafty and vast, filled with the echoes of dripping water. Nathan walked down the central aisle, his boots clicking softly on the damp concrete. He knew how men like Grant Mercer operated. They kept their prizes close but hidden, locked away in places where screams were swallowed by the noise of the harbor.

At the far end of the warehouse, a wooden staircase led up to a suspended metal office. A single line of yellow light leaked from beneath the door.

As Nathan reached the bottom of the stairs, the door at the top opened. Grant Mercer stood on the landing, flanked by three heavily armed mercenaries. He looked different than he had in the warm, safe confines of the cafe. The polite, wealthy-father facade was gone, replaced by the jagged edge of a desperate predator.

"You're a long way from your territory, Russo," Mercer sneered, leaning over the railing. "The outfit doesn't run the docks. You've got no jurisdiction here."

"I don't need jurisdiction," Nathan replied, taking his first step up the metal stairs. "I have a promise to keep to two little girls."

Mercer laughed, a harsh, dry sound. "Two stray mongrels. You're risking a war with the East Coast syndicates for a couple of kids who won't even remember your name in ten years."

"They'll remember," Nathan said calmly. "And so will you."

From inside the office, a muffled cry echoed. It was a woman’s voice, raw and terrified.

"Nathan!" Caleb shouted from below, warning him as the three mercenaries raised their weapons.

The next ten seconds were a blur of violence. Nathan threw himself flat against the metal stairs as bullets ripped through the iron grating. He fired three times in rapid succession. The first guard tumbled over the railing, crashing onto the concrete below. Caleb provided covering fire from behind a forklift, pinning the remaining two guards.

Nathan scrambled up the last few steps, tackled Mercer through the office door, and they crashed into a desk littered with false passports and shipping manifests.
