Chapter 7 - The Trap is Set

To draw out the Falcone family’s lead enforcer in the Midwest—a brutal hitman known only as "The Tailor" (no relation to Nora)—Nathan needed a bait they couldn't ignore.

He leaked a rumor through Chicago's criminal underground that Evelyn and the twins were being moved to an abandoned railway yard on the city’s south side, preparing to escape to Canada.

"It's too dangerous, Nathan," Evelyn said as they prepared for the operation. She was helping him load magazines in Nora’s back room. "If they realize it’s a trap, they’ll bring everyone they have."

"That’s exactly what I want," Nathan said. "I want them all in one place."

June and Jade stood by the door, watching them with wide, anxious eyes. Jade walked over to Nathan and pulled a small, plastic lucky charm from her pocket—a prize from a cereal box. She pressed it into his large hand.

"Keep it safe," Jade whispered. "It keeps the bad dreams away."

Nathan looked at the cheap plastic toy, then down at the little girl who had survived a nightmare. For the first time in years, the hardened mafia boss felt the corner of his mouth twitch into a genuine, faint smile. He slipped the charm into his vest pocket.

"I will," he promised. "Keep your mother safe while I'm gone."
