Chapter 10 - Where the Sunshine Stays

Six months later.
Spring had arrived in Lake Forest. The snow had melted, giving way to rolling green lawns, blooming white roses, and bright, warm sunshine that flooded the courtyard of the Vance Estate.
The high iron gates that had once felt like a prison now stood open, welcoming the warm breeze off the lake.
On the back terrace overlooking the gardens, a large white wooden table was set for lunch.
Eight-year-old Lily was running through the grass, wearing a bright yellow sundress—clean, untorn, and beautifully tailored—playing tag with a golden retriever puppy. Her laughter bounced off the stone walls like music.
Nearby, in a double wooden crib under the shade of an oak tree, one-year-old twins Leo and Toby were babbling happily, playing with plush toy bears.
Mrs. Gable walked out onto the terrace carrying a pitcher of fresh lemonade, smiling warmly at the sight of the thriving children.
Maya stood near the rose garden, wearing a simple white linen dress, her hair flowing softly over her shoulders. Her skin was healthy, her cheeks rosy, and the hollows of grief that had once defined her face were entirely gone, replaced by a radiant, unyielding beauty.
Strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind.
Dante pulled her back against his chest, resting his chin on her shoulder, his hands folding over hers. He wore a simple white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking completely relaxed, devoid of the heavy armor he had worn for a decade.
"What are you thinking about?" Dante whispered into her ear, pressing a soft kiss against her cheek.
"I was thinking about the night in the supermarket," Maya admitted softly, turning her head to smile up at him. "How Lily stood there with a quarter, promising to pay back a stranger for a carton of milk."
Dante chuckled softly, looking out at Lily, who was currently tumbling over the grass with the puppy.
"She kept her promise," Dante said gently, his dark eyes filled with profound warmth. "She paid me back in full."
Maya turned around in his arms, wrapping her hands around his neck. "How did she pay you back?"
Dante looked deep into her eyes, pulling her flush against his heart.
"She brought me you," Dante whispered. "She gave me a family. She gave me a reason to turn this fortress into a home."
Lily came running up the terrace steps, her face flushed with excitement, dragging her puppy behind her. She ran right up to Dante and Maya, tugging on Dante’s sleeve just as she had done six months ago at the supermarket.
Dante immediately dropped to one knee, looking at the little girl with pure, paternal devotion.
"Yes, Lily?" Dante asked softly.
Lily opened her small fist, revealing a shiny silver quarter resting in her palm. She held it out to him with a proud, mischievous grin.
"I saved this from my allowance," Lily said proudly. "For the milk."
Dante looked at the quarter, then at Maya, a rich, genuine laugh bursting from his chest. He took the tiny coin, closing his hand around it reverently, and pulled Lily into a warm, tight hug.
"Debt settled, little sister," Dante whispered into her hair. "Debt settled in full."

Maya knelt beside them, wrapping her arms around her husband and her sister, while the twins babbled happily under the spring sun.
The shadows of the past were gone, the darkness of the underworld defeated, and beneath the bright blue sky of Illinois, Dante and Maya had built a legacy founded not on blood or fear, but on mercy, courage, and unconditional love.
