Chapter 9 - The Battle for the Estate

The grand foyer was a war zone.
Glass from the skylight showered down onto the marble floor as Vane’s mercenaries flooded through the entrance. Muzzle flashes illuminated the gloom, accompanied by the deafening roar of automatic weapons echoing off the high ceilings.
Dante moved through the shadows like a ghost. He fired with lethal, terrifying precision, taking down three attackers before they even realized he was on the balcony above them.
Julian Vance stood near the front door, looking panicked, holding a crowbar as Vane’s men attempted to breach the heavy steel door leading to the upper floors.
"Faster!" Julian yelled, his voice trembling. "If Dante comes down those stairs, we're all dead!"
"Shut up, Julian!" Arthur Vane snarled, reloading his rifle. "We take the kids, we force Vance to sign over the Syndicate shares, and then we burn this place to the ground!"
"You're not burning anything, Arthur," a voice cold as the winter storm echoed from the top of the marble staircase.
Vane spun around, raising his rifle, but Dante was already moving.
Dante leapt over the marble banister, dropping onto the foyer floor like a panther. He kicked Vane’s rifle out of his hands, sending it clattering across the slick floor, and slammed his heavy fist directly into Vane’s jaw. The bone shattered with a sharp crack, sending the mob boss crashing into the stone fountain.
Julian let out a terrified shriek, dropping his crowbar and trying to run toward the open front doors.
Dante didn't even look. He fired a single shot into the doorframe right beside Julian's head. The stone exploded into splinters, stopping Julian in his tracks.
"Step away from the door, Julian," Dante growled, his hand covered in Vane’s blood as he walked slowly toward his half-brother.
"Dante... please!" Julian fell onto his knees, sobbing hysterically in the snow blowing through the doorway. "It was Vane! He threatened to tell the police about the Macau funds! He forced me to open the gate!"
"You betrayed your blood," Dante said, his voice dropping into a register devoid of human mercy. "You endangered a little girl and two infants for your own cowardice."
Before Dante could pull the trigger, Maya emerged from the dark hallway behind the balcony. She held a heavy iron fireplace poker in her hands, her dress torn, but her face set in concrete.
"Dante!" she shouted down to him. "The police sirens! Leo got a backup signal through!"
In the distance, cut through the howling blizzard wind, the wail of dozens of police cruisers echoed up the long driveway.
Dante stared at Julian for a long, agonizing second. Then he lowered his weapon slightly, swinging his fist across Julian’s face, knocking him unconscious into the snowbank.
"Leo," Dante called out smoothly as his surviving guards swept into the foyer, securing the remaining mercenaries. "Hand Julian and Vane over to the federal prosecutors. Give them the encrypted ledgers from my safe. Ensure they both spend the rest of their natural lives in supermax."
Dante turned around, looking up at the balcony where Maya stood.
The adrenaline of the battle washed away, leaving only the fierce, burning truth of what they meant to each other. Dante walked up the grand staircase, stepping over the debris, until he stood right in front of her.
Maya dropped the fireplace poker. It clattered onto the marble.
She didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around Dante’s neck, pulling him down into a deep, desperate kiss that tasted of rain, gunpowder, and absolute surrender.
Dante wrapped his arms around her waist, lifting her off her feet, holding her close as if he would never let her go.

"I love you, Maya," Dante whispered against her lips, saying the words for the very first time. "I loved you from the moment you stood up to me in that warehouse."
Maya wept happy tears, pressing her forehead against his. "I love you, Dante. With all my heart."
