Chapter 4 - The Gilded Cage

The Vance Estate in Lake Forest sat like a dark, magnificent palace amidst fifty acres of snow-covered pine forest. Surrounded by high stone walls, iron gates, and state-of-the-art security, it was a fortress disguised as a mansion.
By 2:00 AM, a fleet of black SUVs pulled into the winding cobblestone driveway.
Dante personally carried the sleeping twins inside, while Leo guided Maya and Lily through the grand entrance. The foyer was breathtaking—soaring marble pillars, a sweeping double staircase, and a crystal chandelier that cast warm golden light over plush oriental rugs.
A middle-aged woman in a crisp housekeeper's uniform, Mrs. Gable, rushed down the stairs, followed by a private pediatrician, Dr. Sterling.
"Mr. Vance!" Mrs. Gable gasped, taking in the sight of the ragged, dirt-streaked young woman and the little girl. "The nursery on the second floor has been prepared as you requested."
"Take the infants first," Dante ordered smoothly, handing the twins over to Dr. Sterling and a nurse. "Full medical check. Formulated feeds, warm baths, and get them into clean clothes."
Maya instinctively stepped forward, reaching out for her babies. "Wait... I want to go with them."
Dante placed a firm, warm hand on her shoulder, stopping her gentle advance. "They are in good hands, Maya. Dr. Sterling has been my family’s physician for twenty years. Let them be cared for. You and Lily need food and sleep."
Maya looked into Dante’s eyes, seeing no malice, only an overwhelming, absolute control that left no room for argument.
Mrs. Gable guided Lily toward a massive dining room where a table was already set with steaming bowls of chicken soup, warm bread, fresh milk, and fruit. Lily’s eyes went wide as saucers. She looked at Dante, then at Maya.
"Can I eat?" Lily whispered, terrified it was a trick.
"Eat as much as you want, sweetheart," Mrs. Gable said gently, her motherly face softening as she pulled out a velvet chair for the little girl.
While Lily devoured the food with the frantic hunger of a child who had known starvation, Dante led Maya into his private study on the main floor.
The room smelled of old leather, mahogany, and expensive scotch. A large fire crackled in the stone hearth, instantly chasing away the bone-chilling cold that had settled in Maya’s marrow.
"Sit," Dante said, pouring a glass of amber liquid and placing it on the desk before sitting opposite her.
Maya remained standing near the fire, her hands wrapped tightly around herself. "When is the wedding?"
"In ten days," Dante replied, leaning back in his leather armchair. "It will be a private ceremony at the city cathedral, followed by a press conference at the Vance Tower downtown. To the world, you are the daughter of an old associate whom I have courted quietly for six months. No one—and I mean no one—can know about your father's debt or the contract."
"Why?" Maya asked, her eyebrows furrowing. "If this is just a business transaction, why hide it?"
"Because my enemies are vultures," Dante said coldly. "If they know you are my weakness—if they know I married you out of convenience—they will target you and your siblings to get to me. To protect you, the world must believe I genuinely love you."
Maya let out a bitter, humorless laugh. "Love? Mr. Vance, you don't even know me."
Dante stood up slowly, crossing the room until he stood directly in front of her. The heat of the fire radiated off his tall frame. He reached out, his long fingers gently touching the bruise on her collarbone—a remnant of her struggle to carry her family's bags through the snow.

"I know you walked through a blizzard to keep three children alive," Dante whispered, his voice low and intense. "I know you were willing to sell your life to Arthur Vane to save them. That is all I need to know about you, Maya."
Maya’s breath caught in her throat. For the first time, looking up into his dark, fierce eyes, she realized that marrying Dante Vance wasn't just a business deal. It was stepping directly into a storm.
