Chapter 2 - The Confrontation in the Corridor

Alexander didn't break eye contact as he descended the final steps of the grand staircase. He ignored the prominent senator trying to greet him, paid no attention to Vivian’s sharp, questioning tug on his arm, and walked straight through the center of the ballroom like a storm moving over water.
"Alexander?" Vivian’s voice held an edge of rising panic as she hurried to keep up with his long, deliberate strides. "Where are you going? The photographers from the Times are waiting at the entrance."
He didn't answer her. His focus was entirely locked on the woman standing near the marble pillar—the ghost who had haunted every dark hour of his life for the past five years.
Mary didn't run. She wanted to. Every survival instinct she possessed screamed at her to grab Kieran, bolt through the service doors, and vanish into the neon-drenched streets of Seoul. But her feet felt rooted to the floorboards. Her daughter was standing ten feet away in the arms of a security guard, and the man who had broken her heart was closing the distance between them.
"Mama?" Kieran whispered, squeezing Mary's hand tighter. He could feel the sudden, terrifying shift in the atmosphere. The man approaching them looked like a giant, dangerous shadow.
Elena immediately bowed her head as Alexander stopped three feet away. "Sir. The vehicle is ready."
Alexander didn't look at Elena. He didn't look at Kyla, who was watching him with wide, curious eyes.
His eyes were fixed entirely on Mary.
"Mary," he said. His voice was a deep, raspy rumble—a sound that sent a shiver through her soul, awakening memories she had buried under years of quiet survival. "You're in Seoul."
"Alexander," Mary said, her tone miraculously cold, though her heart was pounding like a trapped bird against her ribs. She pulled Kieran slightly behind her skirt, her motherly instincts flaring instantly. "I didn't know this was your event."
"It's a charity gala hosted by my foundation," Alexander said quietly. His gaze flicked down to Kieran.
The boy peeked out from behind Mary's dress, his dark hazel eyes meeting Alexander's with fearless curiosity.
Alexander went completely still. The breath hitched in his throat. The boy's chin, the slight curve of his dark brows, the stubborn set of his mouth—it was like looking into an old photograph of himself at six years old.
"Who is this?" Alexander demanded, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register.
Before Mary could craft a lie, Kyla squirmed in Elena's arms, pointing her small finger dramatically at Kieran. "Daddy! Look! That's Kieran! He looks just like me! He says he doesn't have a daddy, so I told him he could share you!"
Vivian caught up to them, her high heels clicking sharply against the tile. Her eyes darted from Mary to Kieran, and the color instantly drained from her face, leaving her heavy makeup looking like a pale mask.
"Mary?" Vivian hissed, her hands clenching into tight fists at her sides. "What is she doing here? Alexander, why are you talking to her? Security should have vetted the guest list!"
"Quiet, Vivian," Alexander barked, not bothering to glance at her. He took a slow step closer to Mary, his tall frame blocking out the warm light of the ballroom, casting a dark shadow over her and the boy. "Answer me, Mary. Whose child is this?"
Mary met his gaze without flinching, holding her head high despite the tears threatening to spill from her eyes. "He is my son. That is all you need to know, Alexander. You gave up the right to ask questions about my life five years ago when you had your men escort me out of Italy."
"He has my face," Alexander whispered, his dark eyes burning with a sudden, intense fury. "He has my eyes. Don't lie to me, Mary. You told me the pregnancy failed. You told me the baby died!"
"I told you?!" Mary let out a harsh, bitter laugh that drew the attention of several nearby guests. "I spent three days in an ICU in Milan while you were off securing your father's territory! Your doctors told me our baby didn't survive! They handed me a death certificate while I was still bleeding! And then your security team dropped a check on my bedside table and told me never to return to the Han estate!"
Alexander froze. His pupils dilated in sheer, unadulterated shock. "What are you talking about? I was told you took the settlement money and left the country before the baby was even born! I was told you didn't want the life of a mafia boss's wife!"
"Lie!" Vivian interrupted frantically, stepping between Alexander and Mary. "Alexander, don't listen to her! She's a gold digger who vanished five years ago and now she's come back with some orphan boy to extort you! She knows how much the Han family legacy is worth!"
"Shut up, Vivian!" Alexander roared, turning on her with a fury so sudden and terrifying that Vivian stumbled back two steps, her lips trembling.
Alexander turned back to Mary, his breathing ragged, his chest heaving under his tailored jacket. He looked at Kieran, then at Kyla, who was now holding her little hand out toward her brother. The realization hit him like a physical blow—a sickening, suffocating wave of truth.
Twins.
Five years ago, Mary hadn't lost a child. She had given birth to twins. And someone in his inner circle had stolen one baby, left the other with a grieving mother, and forged a trail of lies that had kept them separated for half a decade.
"Elena," Alexander commanded, his voice shaking with a dangerous, lethal authority.
"Yes, Mr. Han?"
"Lock down the building," Alexander ordered, his eyes never leaving Mary's face. "Nobody leaves this venue. Cancel the private jet. Call my personal security team. I want the entire top floor cleared in five minutes."
"Alexander, you can't be serious!" Vivian gasped, her voice shrill with desperation. "This is a public event! The press is outside!"
"I don't give a damn about the press," Alexander growled, stepping forward and reaching down toward Kieran.
May you like
"Don't you touch him!" Mary snapped, stepping in front of her son, her eyes blazing with fierce protection. "You gave up your family five years ago, Alexander! You don't get to command us now!"
"He is my son, Mary," Alexander said, his voice dropping into a desperate, heart-wrenching whisper that only she could hear. "And if that little girl in Elena's arms is your daughter... then someone lied to both of us. And I am going to tear this city apart until I find out who."
