Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

At the Vale estate, Vivien was learning that hiding from the world required an immense amount of discipline.

By the third day of her stay, she had memorized every inch of the modern fortress. The house was a masterpiece of minimalist architecture, all polished concrete, black marble, and massive glass panels that overlooked the shifting turquoise waters of the bay. Yet, despite the luxury, the underlying current of violence was impossible to ignore. Every guard she passed wore a tailored suit designed specifically to hide the shoulder holsters underneath. Marcus, the stone-faced head of security, checked the security perimeters every twenty minutes like a clockwork soldier.

She spent her afternoons in the grand library, surrounded by thousands of first-edition books that Lucian had collected from his travels around the world.

"You're ignoring the fruit," Lucian’s voice broke the silence.

Vivien looked up from a leather-bound volume of poetry to find him standing in the doorway, holding a secure encrypted tablet. He was dressed in his signature dark suit, his tie perfectly knotted, looking every bit the cold billionaire executive.

"Mrs. Quan’s mangoes are excellent, but I’m not hungry," Vivien said, setting the book down on her lap. "I’m tired of being a ghost, Lucian. I watched the local news this morning on the library monitor."

Lucian walked into the room, sitting on the edge of the large mahogany desk. "And what did the news say?"

"It said Vivien Mercer suffered a severe nervous breakdown due to the stress of the wedding and is currently receiving treatment at a private facility in Switzerland," she said, her voice tight with suppressed anger. "My father issued a press release. They’re erasing me. They’re turning me into a crazy woman so they can explain away my absence while they try to find a legal loophole for their merger."

Lucian flipped the tablet around, sliding it across the desk toward her. "They’re doing more than that. Look at the financial filings from an hour ago."

Vivien picked up the tablet. Her eyes scanned the corporate records. Her personal bank accounts had been frozen by her father’s firm, citing 'incapacity due to mental instability.' Her credit cards were canceled. Even her car, which had been registered under the family’s corporate umbrella, had been reported stolen.

"They're starving me out," she whispered, her fingers shaking as she handed the tablet back. "They think if I don't have a dollar to my name, I’ll have to crawl back to Damian."

"That’s standard Torres protocol," Lucian said smoothly, his eyes narrowing. "They isolate the target. They cut away the resources until submission feels like survival. But they made one fundamental error."

"What's that?"

"They forgot that you are currently staying with the man who controls fifty-one percent of the private banking licenses in the state of Florida," Lucian said, standing up and reaching into his breast pocket. He pulled out a sleek, unbranded black titanium credit card and slid it across the table until it touched her hand. "This is connected to a private offshore trust in the Cayman Islands. It has no limit, no tracking signature, and your name is the only authorized signature on the encrypted backend."

Vivien stared at the black card, her breath catching. "Lucian... I can't accept this. This is millions of dollars."

"It’s an investment," Lucian corrected, walking over until he was standing right beside her chair. He reached down, his large, warm hand gently covering hers, his fingers pressing the cold metal card into her palm. The sudden warmth of his skin sent a electric jolt straight to her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs. "You are my weapon, Vivien. And I don't allow my weapons to be starved out by low-level thugs. Use it. Buy clothes, buy a car, buy whatever you need to remind your father that you don't belong to him anymore."

Vivien looked up into his dark, fierce eyes, seeing the absolute, unyielding protective instinct hidden behind his cold facade. "Why are you really protecting me like this, Lucian? It’s more than just his brother. I can see it in your face."

Lucian’s jaw tightened, his thumb lightly tracing the back of her hand for a fraction of a second before he pulled back, his mask slipping back into place. "Because when I looked at you on those cathedral steps, Vivien... I saw myself three years ago. Standing in the rain, watching powerful men rewrite the truth, expecting me to just bow my head and take the loss. I didn't bow then. And I’m damn well not going to let them make you bow now."
