Chapter 5 - The First Strike

The transformation of Vivien Mercer began on a Thursday afternoon at the design boutiques of the Design District.
Armed with Lucian’s black card and flanked by Marcus and three heavily armed security guards disguised as personal assistants, Vivien walked into the most exclusive fashion house in Miami. She didn't look like the broken bride from the cathedral anymore. She wore a stunning, emerald-green tailored silk jumpsuit that highlighted her sharp collarbones and dark eyes, her hair styled into a sleek, professional bob.
She spent three hours systematically purchasing an entirely new wardrobe—clothes that screamed power, elegance, and defiance. She bought structured blazers, high-end Italian leather boots, and a stunning, blood-red silk gown for an upcoming charity gala that she knew her family would be attending.
As she stepped out of the boutique onto the sun-drenched pavement, a black Mercedes SUV suddenly screeched to a halt at the curb, blocking her path.
The doors flew open, and Damian Torres stepped out, accompanied by four of his family’s union enforcers. He looked furious, his hair disheveled, his eyes fixed entirely on Vivien.
"Vivien!" Damian shouted, marching toward her. "What the hell is this? You're in Switzerland! That's what your father told the press! What are you doing here?"
Marcus moved instantly, his massive frame stepping in front of Vivien like a steel wall, his hand resting casually inside his jacket where his sub-automatic pistol was holstered. The three other Vale guards formed a perfect defensive triangle around her.
"Step back, Mr. Torres," Marcus said, his voice a low, gravelly warning. "You are encroaching on private property."
Damian stopped a few feet away, his eyes scanning the Vale guards before locking onto Vivien behind them. A vicious, arrogant smirk spread across his face when he noticed the black titanium card she was holding. "Well, look at this. The good girl found herself a sugar daddy. You ran out on our forty-million-dollar merger to play whore for Lucian Vale?"
Before Marcus could react, Vivien stepped out from behind his shoulder. Her face was a mask of pure, freezing disdain. She looked at the man she had almost married, feeling absolutely nothing but a deep, profound disgust.
"The merger is dead, Damian," Vivien said, her voice clear, resonant, and completely devoid of fear. "And as for my dignity... I left it on the cathedral steps along with your cheap engagement ring. If you or my father touch my bank accounts or leak another lie to the press, I will personally hand over the encrypted thumb drive containing your family’s falsified union labor audits to the federal prosecutor downtown."
Damian’s smirk froze, his face draining of color. "How do you know about the audits?"
"I lived with you for two years, Damian," Vivien said, stepping closer until she was inches from Marcus’s defensive line. "You used to leave your briefcase unlocked on the kitchen counter while you were in the shower with my sister. Did you really think I was too stupid to look inside?"
Damian’s jaw flexed violently, his hands clenching into fists. "You think Lucian Vale cares about you, Viv? He’s using you to get to me! The moment he burns my Brickell project, he’ll throw you back into the gutter where he found you!"
May you like
"Then at least I’ll be in a cleaner gutter than the one you live in," Vivien shot back coldly. She turned her back on him, walking toward the waiting Vale limousine. "Marcus, let's go. The air around here smells like garbage."
As the limousine pulled away from the curb, Damian stood on the pavement, his face a mask of apocalyptic rage, shouting into his phone as he called his father. The war for Miami had officially begun, and the runaway bride had just fired the first shot.
