Chapter 8 - The Cornered Beast

The collapse of the Brickell merger was a mortal blow to the Torres syndicate. Within twenty-four hours of the gala, the federal task force raided three of their primary union warehouses, seizing financial ledgers that connected Damian’s father directly to the southern cartel routes. Arrest warrants were issued for the entire senior board of Torres Construction.
Richard Mercer, desperate to save his own firm from the fallout, publicly dissolved his corporate alliance with the Torres family, issuing a frantic press release claiming he had been deceived by Damian’s fraudulent practices. He tried to call Vivien fifty times, begging for a meeting, but his calls were blocked by the Vale security servers.
But a cornered beast is the most dangerous creature in the jungle.
On a rainy Tuesday evening, while Lucian was downtown at a high-stakes meeting with the federal prosecutor, a dark delivery van pulled up to the service entrance of the Vale estate. The driver, wearing a standard courier uniform, handed a heavy insulated box to Mrs. Quan, claiming it was a delivery of fresh truffles from France that the Don had ordered for Vivien.
Mrs. Quan took the box into the kitchen, entirely unaware that the base of the container held a sophisticated, localized electromagnetic pulse (EMP) device.
At exactly 9:14 PM, the device detonated.
A silent, invisible wave of energy erupted through the kitchen, instantly short-circuiting the estate’s primary power grid, the backup generators, and the encrypted security servers. The entire fortress was plunged into absolute, suffocating darkness, the security gates unlocking automatically as a safety override.
Before Marcus and the guards could react to the blackout, four black SUVs breached the outer palms, their headlights cut, twenty heavily armed Torres enforcers spilling out onto the lawns, firing automatic weapons with suppressed barrels.
Inside the library, Vivien stood up, her pulse exploding with a sudden, terrifying panic as the emergency lights failed to trigger. She could hear the muffled, rapid thuds of gunfire from the lower levels, accompanied by the screams of wounded men.
"Vivien! Stay down!" Marcus’s voice shouted from the hallway, followed by the deafening blast of his shotgun clearing the corridor.
Vivien scrambled behind the heavy mahogany desk, her fingers clawing at the polished wood as the library doors were violently blown off their hinges by a tactical charge.
Two men in black balaclavas stormed into the room, their flashlight beams sweeping across the space until they caught her in the bright, blinding glare. Before she could scream, a heavy cloth saturated with chloroform was slammed over her mouth and nose.
She fought wildly, her fingers scratching at the attacker's face, but the sweet, chemical fumes quickly filled her lungs, dragging her down into a dark, helpless unconsciousness.
When she woke up, the smell of rain had been replaced by the heavy, suffocating scent of dust, industrial oil, and rusted metal. She was tied to a heavy steel chair in the center of an abandoned warehouse, a single halogen bulb hanging from a wire high above her, casting long, skeletal shadows across the concrete floor.
Standing in front of her, his tuxedo replaced by a dirty leather jacket, his face pale and maniacal, was Damian Torres. Beside him stood Cassidy, her little sister looking terrified, biting her nails in the corner.
"Welcome back, Viv," Damian sneered, walking over and grabbing her jaw hard enough to bruise. "You thought you were a queen? You thought Lucian Vale could protect you from me?"
Vivien swallowed hard, her head spinning from the remnants of the drug, but she refused to let him see her cry. "Lucian will kill you for this, Damian."
"Vale is currently surrounded by forty federal marshals downtown because my father’s lawyer leaked a falsified report connecting his bank to the same cartel accounts," Damian laughed coldly, a sound of pure, desperate madness. "By the time he clears his name, we’ll be on a private plane to Venezuela. And you..." He reached into his jacket, pulling out a heavy legal document and slamming it onto her lap. "You are going to sign this power-of-attorney clause. It transfers your personal shares of the Mercer holdings to Cassidy, who will then sign the merger over to my father’s secondary shell company. We get the clean capital, and you get a one-way ticket to the bottom of the Atlantic."
Cassidy stepped forward, her voice trembling. "Damian... you said we were just going to force her to sign! You said you wouldn't hurt her!"
"Shut up, Cassidy!" Damian roared, spinning around and backhanding her across the face, sending her crashing into a stack of rusted iron pipes. "The federal government is burning my life down! I don't give a damn about your sisterly affection! Vivien, sign the papers, or I will start cutting fingers off until you do!"
Vivien looked at her sister weeping on the floor, then up at the monster she had almost married. She tightened her jaw, her eyes flashing with an absolute, unyielding defiance that she had learned from the shadow king of Miami.

"Go to hell, Damian," she whispered.
Damian’s face contorted into a mask of pure demonic rage. He pulled a sleek black switchblade from his pocket, the steel blade clicking open with a terrifying flash under the halogen bulb. "Wrong answer, Viv."
