CHAPTER 1 — THE PERFORMANCE BEGINS

Mom didn’t hesitate.

She simply nodded when I said the word confused.

But her eyes told me everything I needed.

She wasn’t confused.

She was ready.

The next morning, Vanessa turned the house into a stage.

When the “independent evaluator” arrived, she was already waiting by the door in soft gray clothing, holding a clipboard like she had been practicing the role for weeks.

“Oh, thank you for coming so quickly,” Vanessa said, voice trembling just enough to sound concerned. “My mother-in-law has been declining rapidly.”

From upstairs, Mom’s voice echoed weakly.

“Ethan… I don’t feel well…”

Perfect timing.

Too perfect.

The evaluator looked up the stairs. “May I speak with her alone?”

Vanessa sighed like she was carrying the weight of the world.

“Of course. But please be careful. She can get agitated.”

She handed over a folder.

Already prepared.

Already controlled.

I watched every movement.

Deployment had taught me something simple:

People who prepare too much… are usually hiding something.

While the evaluator went upstairs, Vanessa leaned closer to me.

“You look exhausted,” she whispered.

I smiled faintly. “Long flight.”

Her hand rested on my arm.

Warm.

Practiced.

Reassuring.

Fake.

“I’ve been doing everything I can,” she said softly. “It’s been so hard managing your mother alone.”

I nodded.

“I appreciate that.”

Her relief was visible.

Because she thought I was still the version of me that left for deployment.

Not the version that came back watching everything twice.

From upstairs, I heard Mom’s voice again.

Stronger this time.

Clear.

“I am not confused.”

A pause.

“I am being held here.”

Footsteps stopped.

Then Vanessa called up sweetly:

“She gets paranoid like this sometimes.”

I didn’t move.

But my hand tightened around my coffee cup.

Just slightly.

The evaluator came down twenty minutes later.

Expression uncertain.

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“Well?”

The evaluator hesitated.

“She appears… more coherent than expected.”

Vanessa’s smile flickered.

“What does that mean?”

“Further observation is required.”

That was not the answer she wanted.

May you like

I saw it in her eyes.

The first crack.
