CHAPTER 2 — THE RECORDING UNDER THE TABLE

That night, I placed the second recorder.

Not hidden in panic.

Hidden in routine.

Vanessa made dinner like nothing had changed.

Mom was allowed at the table.

Watched.

Controlled.

Her wrists were hidden under long sleeves.

But I saw her flinch every time Vanessa moved behind her.

That told me enough.

At dinner, Vanessa leaned into character again.

“She has good days,” she said gently. “But then she becomes… difficult.”

Mom looked at me.

Just once.

A warning.

I understood it immediately:

Don’t react yet.

So I didn’t.

Instead, I played my part.

“That must be exhausting for you,” I said to Vanessa.

She almost smiled.

Almost.

“Yes,” she whispered. “It really is.”

That was all she needed.

Validation.

Permission.

Confidence.

Later that night, I replayed the recorder.

Vanessa’s voice filled the silence.

Cold.

Unfiltered.

“She used to be sharper,” she said.

A pause.

“But no one trusts an old woman anyway.”

A second voice.

The evaluator.

“You are requesting full guardianship transfer?”

“Yes,” Vanessa replied immediately. “Before she hurts herself… or someone else.”

I paused the recording.

That was the moment everything changed.

Not suspicion anymore.

Evidence.
