CHAPTER 4 — THE TRAP OPENS

At 9:00 a.m., the evaluator returned with an officer.

Vanessa was ready.

Mom was brought downstairs slowly.

Acting.

Perfectly.

Confused.

Weak.

“I don’t understand why I’m here,” Mom murmured.

Vanessa placed a hand on her shoulder.

“See?” she said softly. “She’s slipping.”

The evaluator opened the file.

“Mrs. Langford,” he said. “We will proceed with temporary psychiatric evaluation based on submitted concerns.”

Vanessa exhaled in relief.

Almost there.

Almost complete control.

Then I spoke.

“Before we proceed,” I said calmly, “there’s something you should review.”

I placed a second folder on the table.

Vanessa frowned.

“What is that?”

“Bank records,” I said.

Her expression tightened slightly.

I continued.

“Security access logs.”

Her breathing changed.

“Audio recordings.”

Now she looked at me fully.

Cold.

Alert.

Dangerous.

The evaluator opened the folder.

And listened.

Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

“No one will trust that old woman.”

Silence.

Then another clip.

Her discussing transfer of funds.

Her discussing guardianship timing.

Her discussing control.

The officer stepped forward immediately.

“Ma’am,” he said, turning to Vanessa, “you need to step away from the patient.”

Vanessa froze.

Just for a second.

Then smiled.

“Ethan,” she said softly, “you’re misunderstanding—”

May you like

I shook my head.

“No,” I said. “For the first time… I’m not.”
