Chapter 11 - The Echo of the Gavel

The warmth of Thanksgiving had faded into the crisp, biting cold of early December. In the cozy living room of the newly remodeled house, Claire sat at the dining table, surrounded by legal documents and spreadsheets. The bright white oak kitchen was empty now, save for the hum of the refrigerator and the blinking light of the coffee maker. While her health had completely recovered and her marriage with Ethan was stronger than ever, reality had a way of knocking on the door just when things felt perfect.
Claire was a senior architect at a prominent firm in the city, a position she had fought hard to retain after her medical leave. But tomorrow, she was scheduled to testify as an expert witness in a high-profile structural failure lawsuit involving a rival construction conglomerate, Vance Enterprises. It wasn't just a routine court appearance; Vance Enterprises was owned by Arthur Vance, Ethan’s estranged uncle—a man who had cut Ethan’s family out of a massive inheritance years ago and had spent the last decade trying to sabotage Ethan's real estate development business.
Ethan walked into the room, two mugs of hot cocoa in hand. He noticed the tension in her shoulders and set the mugs down, gently placing his hands on her back. "Still looking at the Vance blueprints?"
"It doesn’t make sense, Ethan," Claire sighed, rubbing her temples. "The foundation reports for the downtown plaza they built... they were altered. If I testify to what I found, Arthur Vance could face criminal negligence charges. But if I push too hard, I know how he operates. He’ll come after us. He’ll come after your firm."
Ethan’s jaw tightened. He remembered the years of psychological warfare his uncle had put him through when he first started his company. Arthur Vance was a man who used money like a weapon. "Claire, you survived a brain aneurysm and a year of grueling rehabilitation. We survived a near-divorce. We don't hide from the truth anymore. If Arthur’s buildings are unsafe, the world needs to know. I’ll stand by you, no matter what he tries."
The next morning, the courthouse was buzzing with reporters. Claire, dressed in a sharp navy blazer, walked up the stone steps with Ethan by her side. As they entered the corridor, they were blocked by a tall, silver-haired man with cold gray eyes. Arthur Vance.
"Ethan," Arthur sneered, ignoring Claire entirely. "I see you’re still letting your wife run your life. Tell her to be careful on the stand today. The construction world is small, and reputations are easily ruined."
Ethan stepped forward, his body shielding Claire. "Keep away from my wife, Arthur. Your threats don't work on us anymore."
On the witness stand, Claire felt the weight of a hundred eyes on her. The defense attorney, hired by Vance, tried to tear her credibility apart, bringing up her past medical history, suggesting her cognitive functions were compromised due to her past illness. Claire felt a surge of panic, the ghost of her old vulnerability creeping back. But she looked out into the gallery and saw Ethan, holding up his hand, his thumb tracing a small circle in the air—their secret signal from counseling that meant I am here, you are safe.

Claire took a deep breath, channeled her inner strength, and looked directly at the judge. "My medical history has no bearing on the physics of concrete and steel, Your Honor. The data proves that Vance Enterprises knowingly used substandard materials."
The courtroom erupted into whispers. Arthur Vance glared at Claire with pure malice. The drama had officially begun, and the peace they had fought so hard to achieve was about to be tested by fire.
