Chapter 14 - Secrets in the Leather Case

They brought the battered leather suitcase back to their hotel room. Outside, the rain poured against the glass, matching the turbulent emotions inside. Ethan sat on the floor, his hands trembling as he popped the rusty latches of the case. Inside were yellowed newspaper clippings, bank statements from the 1990s, and a handwritten diary kept by his mother.
Claire sat beside him, sorting through the documents with an architect's eye for detail. As she cross-referenced the old bank accounts with the current financial structures of Vance Enterprises, a chilling realization hit her.
"Ethan, look at this," Claire said, pointing to a series of shell companies listed in Eleanor’s diary. "These are the exact same offshore accounts Arthur is using now to fund his current development projects. The ones I testified against last week."
Ethan looked up, his eyes bloodshot but fierce. "He didn't just ruin my mother's life. He’s using the stolen family legacy to build a crooked empire. This isn't just about a bad foundation anymore, Claire. This is systemic fraud spanning thirty years."
But their discovery was cut short by a frantic call from Sarah back home.
"Ethan! Claire! You need to come home right now," Sarah’s voice was panicky, breathless. "Someone broke into your house. The kids are safe—they were at my place for a movie night—but the house... they trashed the office. They were looking for something."
Claire’s heart stopped. The blueprints. The court documents. Arthur knew Eleanor had contacted Ethan. He knew the secrets were out.
They caught the red-eye flight back. Walking into their newly remodeled home, Claire felt a wave of anger. The beautiful white oak kitchen was untouched, but Ethan’s home office was a disaster. Drawers were pulled out, papers scattered across the floor. On the desk, carved into the wood with a knife, was a single word: STOP.
Liam and Ava were staying at Sarah’s, terrified to come home. Ethan stood in the middle of the ruined office, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. The vulnerability he had felt as a ten-year-old boy abandoned by his mother transformed into a roaring fire of protective fury.

"He crossed the line," Ethan whispered, his voice dangerously calm. "He threatened my children. He broke into our home. This ends now."
Claire walked up to him, wrapping her arms around his waist. "We don't fight him separately, Ethan. Remember our promise. We face the storm together."
