Chapter 18 - The Darkest Hour

The threat Marcus warned them about materialized three days before Christmas. The holiday spirit was completely absent from the city as a massive winter storm rolled in, burying the streets in snow and ice.

Ethan was stuck downtown at a final legal deposition against Vance Enterprises, while Claire stayed home with Ava and Liam. The house felt safe, warm, and bright against the bleak weather outside. The Christmas tree blinked with colored lights, and the drawings on the fridge remained a symbol of their resilience.

Suddenly, the power went out. The house was plunged into pitch darkness.

"Mom?" Liam’s voice called out from the living room. "The heater stopped."

"It’s just the storm, sweetie," Claire said calmly, searching for a flashlight in the kitchen drawer. "Stay where you are."

But then, the security alarm system beeped—not the sound of a power loss, but the warning chime of a broken perimeter window in the basement.

Claire’s heart leaped into her throat. Her medical training and survival instincts kicked in instantly. "Ava! Liam! Upstairs, right now! Lock yourselves in my bathroom!"

She didn't wait to see if they complied. Claire grabbed a heavy metal flashlight and moved toward the basement door. Downstairs, she heard heavy footsteps crunching over broken glass.

A man climbed up the stairs, dressed in dark clothing, his face hidden by a ski mask. In his hand, he held a container of gasoline. Arthur Vance hadn't sent a lawyer this time; he had sent an arsonist to erase the evidence, the house, and the family once and for all.

"Who are you?" Claire demanded, shining the bright flashlight directly into his eyes, blinding him temporarily.

The intruder cursed, lunging forward. Claire didn't hesitate. She swung the heavy flashlight with all her might, striking the man across the shoulder. He grunted, dropping the gasoline container, but reached out and grabbed Claire’s arm, throwing her hard against the white oak kitchen island.

Pain shot through her head, dangerously close to where her old scar was. For a terrifying second, Claire felt a wave of dizziness, the old fear of her illness threatening to paralyze her. No, she thought. Not again. I am not weak.

She grabbed a heavy ceramic mixing bowl from the counter and smashed it down on the attacker’s head. The bowl shattered, and the man stumbled backward, disoriented.

At that exact moment, the front door was kicked open. Ethan burst into the house, followed by two police officers who had been patrolling the neighborhood due to the Vance investigation. Ethan saw the intruder, tackled him to the ground, and pinned him down until the officers secured the handcuffs.

Ethan ran to Claire, lifting her into his arms, his chest heaving with terror. "Claire! Oh my god, Claire, are you hurt?"

Claire looked up at him, her breathing ragged, but her eyes clear and filled with absolute fire. "I’m fine. The kids are safe. We broke his play, Ethan. It’s over."
