Chapter 10 - The Unshakable Queen

Five years later, the estate looked even more magnificent than it had when my grandfather first laid its foundation.

The ivy crawling up the western stone wall was thick and emerald-green, and the interior halls echoed not with the cold, demanding voices of ungrateful guests, but with the warm, vibrant energy of a home truly lived in.

I sat at the head of the long mahogany dining table—the exact same table where Agnes had once tried to humiliate me, and where Julian had once stood as a monument to cowardice and greed.

Only this time, the room was filled with people who mattered: brilliant executives from the Sterling Foundation, trusted friends who had stood by me through the fire, and a nine-year-old girl with bright eyes and an unshakeable spirit who was currently explaining to everyone at the table how she planned to run the entire corporation when she grew up.

“And then, when I’m CEO, nobody is ever allowed to be mean to anyone in the kitchen!” Lily declared dramatically, waving her fork in the air, causing the entire table to erupt in warm, affectionate laughter.

I smiled, raising my crystal glass of sparkling water—crisp, clean, and entirely sufficient—and looked around the table at the bright, beautiful life I had fought so hard to reclaim.

The door to the grand foyer chimed softly as Robert welcomed our evening guests for a charity gala supporting pediatric research—a foundation fully funded and directed by the Sterling-Vance Master Trust.

I stood up, smoothing down the front of an elegant emerald silk gown that caught the warm light of the crystal chandeliers.

My reflection in the massive gilt-framed mirror in the hallway caught my eye. There was no shadow of the terrified, blood-stained woman who had once stood on these stairs holding a burning child. There was only a woman who knew exactly who she was, what she owned, and what she was worth.

I walked out to greet our guests, my head held high, my steps steady and unyielding.

They had tried to make me feel like a guest in my own home. They had tried to break my spirit, silence my voice, and steal my child.

Instead, they had simply taught me how to roar.

And from that day forward, nobody would ever question who sat upon the throne.
