Chapter 6 - Inside Courtroom 3B

Judge Thomas Callahan was a man who had seen everything in thirty years on the bench. He had silver hair, heavy-framed glasses, and a reputation for having zero tolerance for drama, perjury, or waste of judicial time.
When we all took our seats, Judge Callahan adjusted his glasses and looked down at the massive stack of emergency petitions piled on his desk.
“Well,” Judge Callahan began, his deep voice echoing off the oak paneling. “In my thirty years on this bench, I have rarely seen an emergency custody motion filed simultaneously with an active federal indictment referral for corporate embezzlement and domestic battery. Let’s start with the basics. Mr. Julian Vance, you are petitioning for joint custody of a four-year-old child while currently residing at an undisclosed downtown hotel, facing felony asset misappropriation charges, and subject to an active restraining order from the primary property owner.”
Julian’s lawyer stood up, sweating profusely. “Your Honor, my client maintains his innocence regarding the corporate allegations, and the domestic dispute was merely an unfortunate escalation during a stressful family gathering—”
“A stressful family gathering?” Judge Callahan interrupted, raising an eyebrow. “Counsel, I have the forensic medical report and high-definition security footage from the foyer cameras of the Sterling estate. Your client struck his wife across the face with enough force to cause a laceration while she was holding a four-year-old child suffering from a 104-degree fever. That isn't an escalation. That is a violent assault.”
Julian shrank back into his chair, staring at the polished mahogany defense table as if it could swallow him whole.
Sarah Sterling stood up smoothly, adjusting her jacket. “Your Honor, in light of the overwhelming evidence of domestic abuse, financial fraud, and total abandonment of parental stability, the plaintiff—Mrs. Evelyn Sterling-Vance—requests an immediate summary dismissal of the respondent’s custody petition, alongside a permanent order of protection preventing Mr. Vance and Ms. Agnes Vance from coming within five hundred yards of either my client or her minor daughter.”
“Granted,” Judge Callahan said without missing a beat. He picked up his heavy wooden gavel and brought it down with a sharp thud. “Emergency custody petition denied with prejudice. Permanent restraining orders issued for both Evelyn Sterling-Vance and minor child Lily Sterling-Vance against Julian Vance and Agnes Vance. Furthermore, all visitation rights are suspended pending a court-appointed psychological evaluation and criminal trial proceedings.”
Agnes let out a loud, theatrical gasp and slumped sideways against the bench, muttering insults under her breath until the bailiff gave her a sharp warning look.
“As for the financial and property disputes,” Judge Callahan continued, looking directly at Julian, “you have forty-eight hours to clear any remaining personal items from the secondary storage units assigned by Sterling Holdings. Any further attempts to harass, contact, or extort the plaintiff will result in immediate revocation of bail and incarceration pending trial. Court is adjourned.”

Thud.
The gavel fell, and with it, the entire artificial castle of sand that Julian and Agnes had built upon my life collapsed into dust.
