Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

By late afternoon, Julian had discovered that pride is a very heavy thing to carry when you’re standing on a public sidewalk with two plastic garbage bags of wrinkled clothes and nowhere to go.
He had tried calling his mother, but Agnes was currently locked in a bitter screaming match with the front desk manager of her boutique hotel because her platinum American Express card had been declined when she tried to order room service. She had no money, no car, and no patience for a son who had just managed to lose a multi-million-dollar empire in less than twenty-four hours.
Desperate, humiliated, and running out of options, Julian finally did the only thing a coward could do when his safety net vanished.
He came crawling back to the only person he had ever truly relied on: his mother.
At 4:00 PM, Agnes’s hotel suite door was unlocked when Julian let himself in using the spare key she had given him years ago. He found her sitting on the edge of a king-sized bed, surrounded by tissue paper and half-empty luggage, her face stained with smeared mascara and furious tears.
“Mom,” Julian breathed, dropping his garbage bags by the door. “Mom, you won’t believe what happened. Chloe… Chloe threw me out. She didn't even care! And my corporate phone is dead, and the lawyers won’t take my calls because—”
“Shut up, Julian!” Agnes snarled, spinning around on the mattress. Her eyes were wild, her silver hair loose and messy around her wrinkled face. “Just shut your useless mouth! Do you have any idea what I’ve been through today? The front desk just threatened to evict me because our account balance is negative! My friends won’t even answer my calls! They think we’re paupers!”
“It’s Evelyn,” Julian muttered, sinking heavily into an armchair, burying his face in his hands. “It was all her. The house, the money, the trust… it was never mine, Mom. It was all hers. Her grandfather built the whole thing, and she just let us play dress-up while she watched us from the sidelines.”
Agnes stopped breathing. Her chest rose and fell in quick, shallow gasps as the terrible, crushing reality finally settled into her bones.
“Her grandfather…” Agnes whispered, her voice trembling. “Arthur Sterling? The industrialist?”
Julian nodded miserably. “Yeah. The very same one.”
Agnes let out a high-pitched, hysterical laugh that sounded dangerously like a breakdown. “We lived in her house. We spent her money. We treated her like a hired servant while she sat quietly at the edge of the table… and we didn't even know she owned the table.”
“What are we going to do, Mom?” Julian asked, looking up with red, tear-rimmed eyes. “We have no money. No car. No home. My corporate career is completely destroyed, and if that audit goes to the D.A., I’m going to prison.”
Agnes stared at the carpet for a long, frozen minute. The aristocratic arrogance that had defined her entire existence seemed to melt away, leaving behind only bitter, venomous despair.
“We aren't going to prison, Julian,” Agnes hissed, her eyes suddenly locking onto his with a terrifying, manic intensity. “And we aren't going to live like beggars. Evelyn has a soft spot. She’s a mother. She cares about that little girl of hers more than anything else in the world.”
Julian frowned, wiping his nose with his sleeve. “What are you saying?”
“I’m saying we go to court,” Agnes said, standing up and smoothing her wrinkled silk blouse with trembling hands. “We file an emergency custody petition. We tell the judge that Evelyn is unstable, vindictive, and weaponizing her wealth to tear a family apart. We sue for full custody of Lily, and substantial alimony to maintain our standard of living. If she wants to keep her daughter from living in squalor, she’ll have to pay us off. Millions of dollars to go away.”
Julian stared at his mother, a flicker of desperate hope igniting in his chest. It was a delusional, reckless, utterly psychotic plan—but when a drowning man is offered a paper straw, he will grab it with both hands.

“Custody…” Julian murmured. “Yeah. Yeah, we can do that. She loves Lily more than anything. She’ll have to negotiate.”
They had no idea that back at Sterling Holdings, Marcus Thorne had already placed a secure wiretap on Julian’s burner phone, and Robert was currently forwarding the entire custody conspiracy file directly to my family law attorney.
