Chapter 1 - The First Fall of the Dominoes

The air inside Vance Logistics Headquarters was usually thick with the scent of roasted coffee beans, expensive leather, and unearned arrogance. But on this humid Tuesday morning, the glass-and-steel lobby tasted like copper and ozone.

Kyle Vance adjusted his silk tie in the reflection of the elevator door, his mind still lingering on the victory of two nights ago. He loved how easily his parents neutralized his sister, Clara. She had always been the black sheep—the stubborn one who went to law school on her own dime instead of leaning on the family empire, the one who married a quiet high school teacher and brought a noisy toddler into their pristine world. In Kyle’s mind, giving two-year-old Lily a swift slap was simply setting boundaries. His parents had agreed. They always agreed.

The elevator doors hummed open on the top floor. Kyle stepped out, expecting his assistant, Brenda, to hand him his triple-shot espresso and the morning freight manifests.

Instead, Brenda was sitting at her desk with her hands folded tight in her lap, her face drained of color. Standing around Kyle’s corner office were six men and women dressed in slate-gray suits. Heavy, military-grade lockboxes sat open on the mahogany conference table, and portable encrypted server rigs were already plugged into the floor ports.

"What the hell is this?" Kyle snapped, his voice booming down the hallway. "Brenda, why are there IT contractors in my space? Get security up here immediately!"

The lead investigator, a tall woman with silver hair pulled into a severe bun, turned to face him. She didn't flinch. She pulled a heavy lanyard from her blazer pocket, displaying a federal badge alongside a lead auditor credential from Kroll Security Audit Services.

"Mr. Kyle Vance?" she asked, her voice flat, devoid of any room for negotiation. "I am Special Auditor Rebecca Vance—no relation to your family. As of 6:00 AM today, under Executive Protocol 9-B of the Vance Family Trust Charter, your executive credentials have been revoked. Your access to the logistics portal, corporate credit accounts, and physical facilities is suspended indefinitely."

Kyle laughed, a sharp, barking sound. "Is this a joke? My father is the Chairman of the Board! I am the Senior Vice President of Operations! You can't lock me out of my own building!"

"Your father owns twenty percent of the voting shares, Mr. Vance," Rebecca replied, holding up a sleek tablet screen showing an active red ledger. "Under the terms set by your grandfather, Donald Vance, thirty-five percent of the voting shares are held in a conditional trust administered by a designated compliance monitor. Last night at 9:42 PM, a formal whistle-blower dossier was filed, triggering Section 12: Violations of Moral Conduct and Corporate Fiduciary Duty."

Kyle felt a cold prickle of sweat start at the base of his hair. "Whistle-blower? Who?"

"The whistle-blower used Master Security Clearance Code VANCE-001," Rebecca said coolly. "A clearance reserved exclusively for the Chief Legal Counsel of the Grandfather's Trust Estate. A position held by your sister, Mrs. Clara Vance."

Kyle’s phone vibrated violently in his palm. He looked down. It was a text from his father: KYLE! What did you do?! The bank just froze our operating credit line! Come home NOW!

"This is absurd!" Kyle shouted, taking a aggressive step forward. "She's mad because of a tiny family disagreement! She's making things up because she's unstable!"

"The dossier was accompanied by forty-eight gigabytes of encrypted financial data, Mr. Vance," Rebecca said, signaling two uniformed security guards who stepped up behind Kyle. "Including three years of off-book fuel requisitions, dummy shell corporations registered in Delaware, and forged bills of lading. Please step away from your desk. You are being escorted off the premises immediately."

As the guards grabbed Kyle’s arms, his smooth, polished persona completely cracked. He thrashed against their grip, his face flushing dark purple. "Tell Clara she's dead! Do you hear me?! She won't get a dime of this company! I'll destroy her!"

The glass doors slid shut behind him, leaving his voice echoing uselessly down the silent hallway.
