Chapter 7 - The Trial of Kyle Vance

Six months later, the Cook County Criminal Courthouse was packed with reporters, corporate observers, and legal teams.

Kyle Vance sat at the defense table wearing a plain navy prison jumpsuit. Six months in county jail had completely stripped away his polished executive gloss. His hair was thin, his eyes were sunken and frantic, and his hands were constantly fidgeting with his yellow legal pad.

Beside him sat his public defender. The high-priced corporate defense attorneys his parents had tried to hire had walked away months ago when the family assets were seized by the bankruptcy court.

In the second row of the gallery sat Arthur and Eleanor Vance. They looked worn out, dressed in faded clothes, sitting silently while corporate peers ignored them completely.

At the front of the gallery sat Clara, dressed in an immaculate grey linen suit, accompanied by Mark. She looked calm, serene, and utterly unshakeable.

The judge, a formidable woman named Evelyn Mercer, struck her gavel with a loud, echoey THUD.

"In the matter of the State of Illinois vs. Kyle Vance," Judge Mercer announced, looking down over her half-frame reading glasses. "The defendant has entered a guilty plea to three counts of Grand Larceny, two counts of Wire Fraud, and one count of Corporate Tax Evasion."

The public defender stood up. "Your Honor, my client expresses deep remorse for his actions. He was under immense corporate pressure and made poor financial misjudgments. We ask the court for leniency, considering his lack of prior criminal record, and request a sentence of probation with community service."

Judge Mercer stared at the attorney, then turned her sharp gaze onto Kyle.

"Leniency?" Judge Mercer’s voice boomed through the courtroom. "Mr. Vance did not make a 'misjudgment.' He systematically siphoned millions of dollars from a family business over three years to fund a lifestyle of grotesque luxury, while using his position of power to intimidate colleagues and family members alike."

She picked up the probation report.

"Furthermore, the pre-sentencing psychological evaluation indicates a severe lack of empathy, a total absence of accountability, and a persistent belief that he is above the law. Mr. Vance, your actions have ruined your family's financial standing, endangered hundreds of logistics employees, and demonstrated a profound moral failure."

Kyle stood up frantically, his voice breaking into a squeak. "Your Honor! Please! My sister set me up! She orchestrated this whole thing because she hated me! I'm the victim here!"

Judge Mercer brought down her gavel violently. "Silence! Another outburst from the defendant and I will hold you in contempt!"

Kyle collapsed back into his chair, trembling violently.

"On Count 1 of Grand Larceny," Judge Mercer read, "I sentence you to seven years in the state correctional facility. On Counts 2 and 3 of Wire Fraud, five years each, to run concurrently. You will serve a total of seven years in state prison, followed by three years of mandatory supervised release, and pay restitution in the amount of four point two million dollars."

"No!" Eleanor screamed from the gallery, throwing her hands over her face and breaking into violent sobs. "No! My baby!"

Arthur buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking silently.

Kyle was immediately surrounded by court officers who pulled his arms roughly behind his back, clicking heavy steel wrist restraints into place. As he was led toward the back door that led to the holding cells, he turned his head wildly toward Clara.

"Clara!" he shrieked, tears cutting through his pale face. "Clara, fix this! Tell them to stop! Please, Clara! I'm sorry! I'm sorry about Lily! I'm sorry!"

Clara sat in her seat, holding Mark’s hand firmly. She watched her brother being pulled through the heavy metal door, her expression impassive. She didn't feel joy at his downfall, nor did she feel guilt. She felt only the cold, quiet satisfaction of a world where consequences finally applied to everyone.
