Chapter 4 - The Order of Seizure

Within three minutes, the grand foyer of the Moretti mansion was flooded with tension.

Four uniformed federal marshals and two suit-clad agents from the Department of Children and Family Services stood inside the entryway, surrounded by six of Daario’s heavily armed guards. The air was thick with the silent promise of extreme violence.

Standing at the front of the federal team was a slick, sharp-featured man in an expensive navy suit, holding a laminated folder.

"Mr. Moretti," the lead agent said, stepping forward with an air of practiced authority. "I am Special Agent Vance from the Federal Child Protection Task Force. We have an emergency court order demanding the immediate surrender of the minor child, Sophia Rossi, into federal custody."

Daario descended the grand staircase with slow, deliberate steps, his hands casually tucked into the pockets of his dark trousers. Margaret walked right beside him, her head held high, her eyes flashing with fury.

"On what grounds, Agent Vance?" Daario asked calmly, stopping at the bottom step.

"The child is a ward of the state," Vance stated smoothly. "She was illegally removed from St. Catherine’s Shelter earlier today. Furthermore, we received an anonymous tip that she is currently being held against her will in the residence of a known organized crime figure."

"I am the Director of St. Catherine’s," Margaret interrupted, stepping past Daario to face the agent directly. "Sophia was not illegally removed. She wandered off to visit a memorial site, and I retrieved her personally. As her legal guardian of record, I authorized her temporary placement in this location due to an active security threat at the shelter!"

Vance turned his gaze onto Margaret, a condescending smirk playing on his lips. "Director Walsh. Your authorization was revoked two hours ago by the State Board of Child Welfare."

Margaret froze. "What? On what authority?"

"On the authority of Deputy Director Marcus Cole," Vance said, pulling a signed document from his folder and handing it to her. "Due to your questionable judgment in bringing a state ward into the home of Daario Moretti, your administrative power over St. Catherine’s has been suspended pending an official investigation."

Margaret scanned the document, her hands shaking with rage. Marcus Cole was her direct supervisor—a man who had spent years lobbying for increased state funding while constantly questioning Margaret’s protective policies regarding foster records.

"Marcus Cole doesn't have the legal right to suspend me without a board hearing!" Margaret snapped.

"He does when an emergency protective order is signed by a circuit judge," Vance countered coldly. He motioned to the two marshals behind him. "Bring the child down."

The two marshals took a step toward the stairs.

Click-click-click.

Instantly, six of Daario’s men raised their automatic weapons, pointing them directly at the heads of the federal marshals. The sound of safety switches being disengaged echoed sharply through the marble foyer.

The marshals froze, their hands hovering near their holsters.

"You're making a massive mistake, Moretti," Vance warned, his voice tightening. "Obstructing federal officers carrying a judicial warrant is a class-one felony. I will bring fifty national guardsmen to this front gate within the hour."

Daario took two slow steps forward. He didn't look at the marshals' guns. He looked directly into Agent Vance’s eyes, his presence so suffocatingly intense that the agent involuntarily backed up half a step.

"Agent Vance," Daario said softly, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You have been an agent for nine years. You drive a luxury German sedan that exceeds your government salary, and your wife recently purchased a vacation home in Naples. Would you like me to tell you which bank account Julian Falcone used to wire your offshore deposit last Tuesday?"

Vance’s face completely drained of color. His mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Margaret looked at Daario in shock, realizing in an instant that Daario hadn't just been searching for Elena Rossi’s records—he had been digging into every official connected to the sudden seizure order.

"You... you can't prove that," Vance stammered, his confident posture collapsing.

"I don't need to prove it in court to ruin you," Daario said quietly. "I have enough financial documentation sitting on my desk upstairs to ensure you spend the next thirty years in a maximum-security penitentiary. Now, let me tell you what is going to happen."

Daario stepped right into Vance’s personal space, towering over the corrupt agent.

"You are going to take your men and step out of my house," Daario commanded. "You are going to call Marcus Cole and inform him that the child was not found at this location. And if I see your face or any member of your task force near my gates again, I will personally release your financial portfolio to the United States Attorney's Office before breakfast."

Vance swallowed hard, a drop of cold sweat rolling down his temple. He looked at the armed men surrounding him, then at the terrifying, unyielding gaze of the mob boss.

"We're leaving," Vance gasped out to his marshals.

"Agent Vance," Margaret called out as the men turned toward the door.

Vance paused, looking back at her.

"Tell Marcus Cole that I am coming for his job," Margaret said, her voice laced with absolute steel. "And tell him he picked the wrong child to sell out."

The federal team retreated hastily through the heavy front doors, which slammed shut behind them with a definitive thud.

Margaret let out a long breath, her heart pounding against her ribs. She turned to look at Daario. He was watching her, a strange, profound expression of admiration in his dark blue eyes.

"You handle corrupt federal agents remarkably well for a shelter director," Daario remarked softly.

"I handle anyone who tries to hurt my children," Margaret replied, adjusting her sweater. "Where did you get that financial information on Vance?"

"I didn't," Daario admitted, a faint, dark smirk touching his lips. "I guessed about the German car and the offshore account. Corrupt agents are remarkably predictable."

Margaret stared at him, stunned, before breaking into a sudden, genuine laugh. "You bluffed a federal agent with a fake offshore account?"

"It wasn't entirely a bluff," Daario smiled faintly, stepping closer to her. "I do own the bank in Naples. I can check his records whenever I like."

May you like

Margaret shook her head, her laughter softening into a warm, quiet smile. "You are a deeply dangerous man, Daario Moretti."

"Only to those who threaten what is mine," Daario said, his voice lowering, his eyes lingering on her face with an intensity that made Margaret’s pulse race for an entirely different reason. "And right now, protecting you and Sophia is the only thing that matters to me."
