Chapter 7 - The Assault on St. Catherine’s

St. Catherine’s Shelter sat dark and silent against the twilight sky. The surrounding streets had been quietly cordoned off by Daario’s men, keeping the public and regular police at a distance while the Moretti forces prepared their strike.

At the rear of the brick building, Daario, Margaret, Marco, and four elite tactical enforcers stood inside the narrow alleyway near the boiler room entrance.

"The main hostage group is being held in the central cafeteria," Margaret whispered, pointing to a blueprint spread out over the hood of a car. "Russo will likely have two men guarding the main doors, two covering the front lobby, and four inside the cafeteria with the children."

"How do we reach the cafeteria without being spotted from the main hallway?" Marco asked.

"The old laundry chute system," Margaret explained, tapping a point on the blueprint. "It runs directly from the basement maintenance room up into the kitchen pantry, right adjacent to the cafeteria. We can bypass the entire hallway surveillance."

Daario looked at Margaret, a dark smile touching his lips. "Brilliant."

He signaled his men. Marco used a heavy hydraulic cutter to quietly snap the lock on the basement door. The iron door swung open silently on oiled hinges.

They moved through the dark, damp basement in absolute silence, guided only by the dim red lights of Daario’s tactical gear. Margaret led the way through the labyrinth of steam pipes until they reached a heavy metal door marked MAINTENANCE & LAUNDRY.

Marco pried the laundry chute hatch open. It was wide enough for a man to climb through using the internal ladder rungs.

"I go first," Daario whispered to Marco. "Once I clear the pantry, bring Margaret up. The rest of the team breaches the front lobby on my signal."

Daario climbed into the chute, moving with astonishing, silent agility for a man of his size. Minutes passed in agonizing tension. Margaret stood in the dark basement, her heart hammering against her ribs, her hands clutching the 9mm gun.

Finally, three quiet taps sounded against the metallic chute wall.

"He's cleared the pantry. Go," Marco instructed Margaret softly.

Margaret climbed into the chute, pulling herself up the steel rungs until she reached the top opening. Strong, warm hands grabbed her waist, pulling her gently out into the dimly lit kitchen pantry.

Daario held her close for a second, verifying she was unhurt, before pointing toward the cracked wooden door leading into the cafeteria.

Through the crack, Margaret could see the horrific scene. Twenty-two children were huddled together on the floor in the center of the room, crying quietly. Three shelter staff members were kneeling in front of them, arms raised. Standing over them were four heavily armed mercenaries in black tactical gear, laughing as one of them checked his watch.

"Ten minutes left!" the mercenary leader, Russo, shouted toward the front doors. "Tell Moretti if his car doesn't turn up with the girl in ten minutes, I start picking off the staff!"

Daario’s eyes turned into cold flint. He pulled a flashbang grenade from his belt, looking at Margaret.

"When this goes off, cover your eyes and ears," Daario whispered. "The second I move, you run to those children and get them behind the industrial steel counters in the back kitchen."

"Got it," Margaret whispered back, setting her jaw.

Daario pulled the pin on the flashbang. He kicked open the pantry door, tossed the grenade directly into the center of the cafeteria, and slammed his shoulder into the frame.

BANG-FLASH!

A blinding burst of white light and a deafening 130-decibel shockwave exploded through the cafeteria. The mercenaries screamed, clutching their eyes and ears, completely disoriented.

In that exact split second, Daario stepped out into the open.

Crack! Crack! Crack! Crack!

Four shots fired with terrifying, surgical precision. Four mercenaries collapsed to the floor instantly, neutralized before they could even raise their weapons.

"Go! Go! Go!" Daario yelled.

Margaret sprinted out of the pantry like a bullet. "Children! To me! Move!" she screamed, her voice cutting through the ringing noise.

The staff members, realizing the rescue was underway, grabbed the youngest children and rushed toward Margaret. She guided them swiftly through the kitchen doors, shoving them behind the heavy, bulletproof stainless-steel prep tables.

Suddenly, the double doors of the cafeteria burst open. Russo, having recovered from the flashbang in the outer hallway, charged into the room holding an automatic shotgun, his eyes wild with rage.

"Moretti!" Russo roared, swinging the shotgun toward Daario.

Daario dove behind a overturned wooden table as a blast of buckshot shredded the wood into splinters.

Russo racked another shell, stepping forward to flush Daario out. But before he could fire, Margaret stepped out from the kitchen doorway, raised her 9mm handgun with two hands, and aimed directly at Russo's chest.

"Hey!" Margaret shouted.

Russo turned his head in shock.

Margaret pulled the trigger.

Crack!

The bullet struck Russo directly in the shoulder armor, throwing him off balance. He stumbled back, dropping the shotgun.

That second was all Daario needed. He rose from behind the table like a vengeful shadow, closed the distance instantly, and delivered a devastating right hook to Russo’s jaw that knocked the mercenary leader completely unconscious onto the floor.

Silence fell over the cafeteria.

The heavy front doors of the shelter were kicked open as Marco and the rest of the Moretti tactical team swept through the building, securing the remaining mercenaries without further bloodshed.

Margaret stood in the doorway, her hands shaking as the gun dropped to her side. Her chest was heaving, cold sweat dripping down her temples.

Daario walked over to her slowly. He reached out, gently taking the gun from her trembling fingers and tucking it into his belt. Then, without saying a word, he pulled her into his arms, crushing her against his chest in a fierce, overwhelming embrace.

"You shot him," Daario whispered, a note of sheer wonder and fierce pride in his voice. "My brave, magnificent woman. You saved them."

Margaret buried her face in his neck, letting out a ragged sob of pure relief as she wrapped her arms tightly around his waist.

"They're safe," she sobbed softly. "The children are safe."

"They're safe," Daario affirmed, kissing her hair repeatedly. "Because of you."
